Gerald Malcolm Durrell

Gerald Malcolm Durrell, born in British India in 1925, became a prominent British naturalist, writer, zookeeper, and conservationist. His early life included moves to England and later to Corfu, Greece, where his fascination with the natural world flourished under the guidance of figures like Theodore Stephanides. After his father's death, the family faced financial difficulties, and Durrell's mother increasingly relied on alcohol. Durrell's early education was informal and often disrupted, with a particular aptitude for natural history.

Following World War II, Durrell used an inheritance to fund animal-collecting expeditions, which led to his successful writing career. His first book, "The Overloaded Ark," detailed his trip to the Cameroons and proved popular, inspiring him to write about his other journeys. A significant work, "My Family and Other Animals," became a bestseller. In the late 1950s, he established the Jersey Zoo, focusing on animal study and captive breeding rather than public display. Despite financial struggles, the zoo, later managed by the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust, became his life's work. Durrell also authored "The Amateur Naturalist" and co-authored its television series, which became his most successful book.

Durrell's personal life included a period of alcoholism and two marriages. He was recognized with an OBE in 1982 and founded the Durrell Conservation Academy to train conservationists. He passed away in 1995 after battling liver cancer. His ashes were divided between Corfu and Jersey Zoo, reflecting his deep connection to both places.

These journeys provided rich material for his writing. His wife, Jacquie, encouraged him to document his first trip, resulting in the successful "The Overloaded Ark." This initial success paved the way for a prolific writing career, chronicling his adventures and observations. In 1959, Durrell established the Jersey Zoo on the island of Jersey. His vision for the zoo was centered on animal conservation and captive breeding programs, rather than public entertainment. The institution faced financial challenges but was sustained by Durrell's writing and fundraising appeals, eventually leading to the formation of the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust and the Durrell Conservation Academy to train future conservationists.
