Gemma Foster

Gemma Ramsay, also known as Gemma Willis, was a character in the Australian soap opera Neighbours, brought to life by actress Beth Buchanan. Her initial appearance was in June 1990, with Buchanan signing a six-month contract, later extended. Gemma was introduced as the niece of Madge Bishop, moving to Erinsborough after her mother's passing. She was depicted as intelligent, independent, and loyal to her friends.

Throughout her storylines, Gemma navigated several relationships, notably with Matt Robinson, which faced challenges including a severe accident and disapproval from her father. She also had relationships with Aidan Devlin and later married Adam Willis. Buchanan departed the role in July 1991 but reprised it for brief periods in 2019 and 2022, primarily to coincide with storylines involving her on-screen daughter, Roxy Willis. The character's development saw her transition from a schoolgirl to a vet, with her appearance and storylines evolving over time.

Gemma Ramsay arrived in the fictional suburb of Erinsborough to live with her aunt, Madge Bishop, following the death of her mother. Initially, Gemma had resided with other relatives in Brisbane while focusing on her education. Upon settling in Erinsborough, she shared a room with Madge, though she sometimes felt like an imposition. Early in her tenure, the actress portraying Gemma, Beth Buchanan, felt the character lacked clear direction, allowing her room for development. Gemma was characterized as carefree and independent, prone to enjoying herself rather than solely focusing on studies, despite possessing intelligence and potential. She had interests in netball and classical and acid house music. Gemma was known for her loyalty to friends and her willingness to challenge authority figures, including teachers. Her career aspirations remained uncertain, with thoughts of nursing and an interest in environmental science.

Gemma's on-screen presence evolved, with initial costume choices described as bland, which Buchanan disliked. A significant makeover involved cutting Buchanan's hair short and dyeing it blonde, aligning with a more modern and mature style for Gemma. This change coincided with producers investing more in the show and entrusting the character with more adult-oriented storylines, such as finishing school and securing employment as a vet. Gemma's romantic life included a brief relationship with Ryan McLachlan, followed by a significant storyline with Matt Robinson. Their relationship was tested by a near-fatal motorbike accident where Gemma almost lost her leg, and further strained by disapproval from Gemma's father, Tom Ramsay. The introduction of Gemma's ex-boyfriend, Aidan Devlin, created further complications and ultimately contributed to Matt's departure from the series. Later, Gemma developed a relationship with Adam Willis, whom she eventually married off-screen.

Beth Buchanan reprised her role as Gemma Willis in 2019, with her return facilitating the introduction of her on-screen daughter, Roxy Willis. Gemma sought assistance from her sister-in-law, Terese Willis, to manage Roxy's behavior. Buchanan returned again a few months later to support Roxy during a difficult period. In late 2021, it was announced that Gemma would reappear for Roxy's wedding to Kyle Canning. Her return scenes aired in January 2022. Buchanan expressed happiness at returning but also some apprehension about viewer recognition of the character. During this return, Gemma initially disapproved of Roxy and Kyle's marriage plans, leading to friction with her daughter.
