F Max M Ller

Johann Ludwig Wilhelm Müller, born in Dessau in 1794, was a German lyric poet whose works, particularly 'Die schöne Müllerin' and 'Winterreise,' became the basis for two famous song cycles by Franz Schubert. Müller received his education at the University of Berlin, specializing in philology and history. He participated in the Prussian army's national uprising against Napoleon between 1813 and 1814, fighting in several key battles before returning to his studies.

After traveling through southern Germany and Italy, Müller published his observations from Italy in 1820. He held positions as a teacher of classics and a librarian in Dessau, where he remained until his death at the young age of 32 from a heart attack. His literary output included collections of poems and songs, often imitating the style of the German Volkslied, and he also engaged in translations and edited a collection of 17th-century lyric poems. His son, Friedrich Max Müller, became a notable orientalist and founder of comparative religion studies.

Wilhelm Müller's poetic career began with contributions to a collaborative volume in 1816, followed by his own collection of poems that same year. His significant reputation was cemented by his 'Gedichte aus den hinterlassenen Papieren eines reisenden Waldhornisten' and 'Lieder der Griechen.' The latter collection served as a prominent expression of German sympathy for the Greek struggle for independence. Müller also published collections of Greek folk songs and lyrical travel writings. A notable characteristic of his poetry is its frequent imitation of the German Volkslied, a style that resonated with many contemporary artists and composers.

While contemporaneous with German Romanticism, Müller's work, particularly 'Die Winterreise,' is argued by some scholars to possess elements of Enlightenment thought. The poems depict a wanderer who actively seeks self-determination, resisting the allure of Romantic ideals and escapism. This figure is characterized by an ability to maintain reflection and a preference for actual being over illusion or imagined futures. The wanderer's journey is presented as a conscious choice to forge an individual path, distinct from the common routes taken by others, aligning with an enlightened subject's emergence from self-imposed immaturity.

Müller's most enduring legacy lies in his popular and political songs, which profoundly influenced musical composition. The song cycles 'Die schöne Müllerin' and 'Winterreise' by Franz Schubert are directly based on his poetry, solidifying their place in the classical repertoire. Beyond Schubert, Müller's lyrical development also impacted Heinrich Heine. Later artistic endeavors, such as Pauline Volkstein's musical settings of his texts and Andrés Neuman's novel 'Traveller of the Century,' further demonstrate the lasting resonance of Müller's work across different artistic mediums and generations.
