Ernest Abraham Hart

Ernest Abraham Hart (1835–1898) was an English medical journalist and editor, best known for his tenure at The British Medical Journal. Born in London to a Jewish dentist, he received his education at the City of London School and St George's Hospital, becoming a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1856. He specialized in ophthalmology, holding a position as ophthalmic surgeon at St Mary's Hospital and introducing several improvements to eye care practices. Hart also developed a method for treating popliteal aneurism, which he was the first to employ in Great Britain.

His most significant contributions, however, were in medical journalism and public health advocacy. As editor of The British Medical Journal from 1866, his editorials were often forceful. He played a crucial role in exposing poor conditions in London workhouse infirmaries, leading to significant reforms in the care of the sick poor across England and the passage of the Infant Life Protection Act of 1872. His legislative efforts extended to public health, sanitation, infectious disease notification, vaccination, and improvements in factory and military medical services. He also became a notable collector of Japanese art.

Ernest Abraham Hart's career was largely defined by his work as a medical journalist, beginning with The Lancet in 1857 and culminating in his long editorship of The British Medical Journal, starting in 1866. In this role, he wielded considerable influence, often through polemical editorials. His advocacy extended beyond the medical profession to broader public health issues. He was instrumental in investigations into London workhouse infirmaries, which spurred widespread reforms in the treatment of the sick poor throughout England. His efforts also contributed to the Infant Life Protection Act of 1872, aimed at curbing the practice of 'baby farming'. He is also credited with being the first in Great Britain to use a specific method for treating popliteal aneurism. Hart's influence permeated legislative efforts concerning public health. He championed the medical profession's role in public health initiatives and was involved in measures concerning the notification of infectious diseases, vaccination policies, and the registration of plumbers. Furthermore, he worked to improve factory legislation, address grievances of Army and Navy medical officers, reform conditions in barrack schools, and highlight sanitary deficiencies in India, particularly concerning cholera prevention.

In the latter part of his life, Ernest Abraham Hart developed a significant interest in Japanese art and culture. His engagement began around 1882 when he initiated contact with Tadamasa Hayashi, a prominent collector. Hart became a notable collector himself and a member of the Japan Society. He frequently delivered lectures on various aspects of Japanese art, including lacquerware. His passion for Japanese culture led him to travel to Japan in 1891 with his second wife, Alice Hart. This period of his life demonstrates a broader intellectual curiosity beyond his primary medical and journalistic pursuits.

Ernest Abraham Hart was a strong proponent of vaccination, authoring the book 'The Truth About Vaccination' in 1880. In this work, he systematically refuted the arguments put forth by anti-vaccination movements, employing medical and statistical evidence to support his claims. Hart presented a substantial body of evidence demonstrating the protective benefits of vaccination, illustrating how vaccinated individuals possessed a greater capacity to resist smallpox compared to those who were unvaccinated. His publication served as a direct counter-argument to the prevailing skepticism and opposition to vaccination during his time.
