Esther Elvina Rose was an American painter known for Impressionist seascapes and exploration of various artistic mediums.

Esther Elvina Rose, born in Minnesota in 1901, was an American artist who developed her craft later in life, beginning to paint at age 45. She studied under several instructors at the San Diego Art Institute, honing her skills in oil, watercolor, collage, and silkscreen techniques.

Rose became particularly recognized for her Impressionist depictions of the California coastline. Beyond seascapes, her artistic output also included still life and landscape paintings. She was an active member of several art associations on the West Coast, including those in the Monterey area and La Mesa, California. Rose passed away in 1990, leaving behind a legacy as a versatile painter.

Her personal life included marriage to Frank Archie Rose, a World War I veteran and former sports writer, with whom she had three children. Two of her children, Eugene Dennis Rose and Eileen Rose Busby, also gained recognition in their respective fields, with Eugene becoming known as Seraphim Rose. The family eventually settled in California, and Esther and Frank retired to Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Artistic Development and Style

Esther Elvina Rose commenced her artistic journey at the age of 45. Her formal training took place at the San Diego Art Institute, where she benefited from instruction by notable figures such as portraitist Frederick Taubes, seascape specialist Bennett Bradbury, and watercolor instructor J. Milford Ellison. Rose's primary artistic medium was oil painting, but she also worked extensively with watercolors. She gained particular renown for her Impressionist interpretations of the California coast, capturing the essence of its seascapes. In addition to these scenic views, her portfolio included still life and landscape compositions. Rose's creative exploration extended beyond traditional painting methods, as she experimented with techniques like silk-screening, serigraphy, screenprinting, printmaking, and collage.

Artistic Affiliations and Later Life

Throughout her career, Esther Elvina Rose maintained active participation in various art communities. She was a member of the West Coast Art Association, the Central Coast Art Association, and the Pacific Grove Art Association, which is situated in the Monterey area. Rose was also affiliated with the Foothills Art Association in La Mesa, California. Following her and her husband Frank's retirement, they relocated to Carmel-by-the-Sea in Northern California. Frank Rose passed away in 1968, and Esther Rose died in 1990 in La Mesa. They are interred together at El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove, California.
