Freddie Prinze was a Puerto Rican-German comedian and actor, known for 'Chico and the Man,' who died by suicide at age 22.

Freddie Prinze, born Frederick Karl Pruetzel, was an American comedian and actor of Puerto Rican and German heritage. He rose to fame starring as Francisco "Chico" Rodriguez in the NBC sitcom "Chico and the Man" from 1974 until his death in 1977. Prinze began his career in stand-up comedy in New York City, performing at clubs like The Improv and Catch a Rising Star, where he famously described himself as "Hunga-rican." His unique background and comedic talent led to significant national exposure, including multiple appearances on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson."

Prinze's career was meteoric, marked by the immense popularity of "Chico and the Man." He also released a comedy album and starred in a made-for-TV movie. Despite his success, Prinze struggled with depression and personal issues, including a DUI arrest and divorce proceedings. His life was cut tragically short when he died by suicide in January 1977 at the age of 22. His death was later the subject of legal proceedings regarding life insurance, with a jury ruling it accidental and medication-induced.

Early Life and Discovering Comedy

Born Frederick Karl Pruetzel in Manhattan, Freddie Prinze was the son of a Puerto Rican mother and a German immigrant father. Raised in a diverse New York City neighborhood, his early life included ballet classes, which he initially took to address a weight issue. This led him to audition for the High School of Performing Arts, where he discovered his passion for drama and comedy. It was while entertaining classmates that he realized his gift for making people laugh. He ultimately left high school before graduating to pursue a career in stand-up comedy, a path that would soon lead to national recognition.

Rise to Stardom and Career Highlights

Prinze quickly established himself on the comedy circuit, notably adopting the persona of a "Hunga-rican" to reflect his mixed Hungarian and Puerto Rican ancestry on his father's side, alongside his Puerto Rican mother. His appearances on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" were pivotal, especially his initial appearance where he was invited for a sit-down interview, a rarity for new comedians. This exposure paved the way for his starring role in "Chico and the Man," a show that became an instant hit. Beyond television, he released a comedy album titled "Looking Good," featuring his catchphrase from the sitcom, and appeared in other television programs and a TV movie.

Personal Life and Tragic End

In his personal life, Freddie Prinze married Katherine Elaine Cochran, with whom he had a son, Freddie Prinze Jr. His relationships also included notable actresses. Prinze faced legal troubles, including an arrest for driving under the influence. He was known to be close with singer Tony Orlando, with whom he shared professional and personal connections. Tragically, Prinze battled depression throughout his career. On January 28, 1977, he died by suicide. His death was ruled a suicide initially, but a later civil case resulted in a jury finding it to be accidental and medication-induced, allowing his family to collect life insurance.
