Edgar Thurston was a British ethnographer and museum superintendent in India, known for his extensive studies on Indian castes, tribes, and customs.

Edgar Thurston (1855–1935) was a British scholar who served as the Superintendent of the Madras Government Museum from 1885 to 1908. Educated in medicine, he also lectured in anatomy at Madras Medical College. His research interests spanned zoology, ethnology, botany, numismatics, and geology, with a significant focus on the anthropology and ethnography of India.

Thurston was involved in the Ethnographic Survey of India, collecting anthropometric data and studying various communities. He applied early anthropometric methods, sometimes linked to the concept of scientific racism, to categorize and understand caste and tribal groups. His extensive work culminated in the seven-volume "Castes and Tribes of Southern India," published in 1909, which documented traditions, manners, and customs. He also authored "Omens and Superstitions of Southern India" and contributed to geographical studies of the region. Several species have been named in his honor, reflecting his contributions to natural sciences.

Ethnographic Research and Anthropometry

Edgar Thurston's work in ethnography was deeply intertwined with the prevailing scientific thought of his time, including theories of scientific racism. He utilized anthropometric measurements, such as skull dimensions and nasal indices, believing they could reveal mental traits and caste affiliations. Thurston lectured on practical anthropology and trained the Madras Police in anthropometry, specifically for identifying individuals belonging to what were then termed "criminal castes." As part of the Ethnographic Survey of India, he collected detailed measurements to document the diverse populations of the subcontinent. His most significant contribution in this area is the monumental "Castes and Tribes of Southern India," a seven-volume work compiled with the assistance of K. Rangachari, which provided a comprehensive record of the traditions, manners, and customs of various groups.

Contributions to Natural Sciences and Museum Work

Beyond his anthropological studies, Thurston made notable contributions to zoology and botany. He amassed extensive collections of plant and animal specimens, many of which were sent to the British Museum. His research included studies on pearl fishing in the Gulf of Mannar, where he explored innovative methods for harvesting. Several species have been named in his honor, including marine organisms like Manaria thurstoni and Mobula thurstoni, as well as the snake Gerrhopilus thurstoni, acknowledging his impact on natural history. His standard author abbreviation in botany, E.Thurst., further signifies his contributions to botanical nomenclature.

Scholarly Career and Recognition

Thurston's career began with studies in medicine at King's College, London, after which he served as a medical officer before joining the Madras Museum in 1885. He held the position of Superintendent until 1908, during which time he also lectured on anatomy. His early research focused on numismatics and geology, later expanding into anthropology and ethnography. He succeeded Frederick S. Mullaly as the Superintendent of Ethnography for the Madras Presidency. Thurston's contributions were recognized with the Kaisar-i-Hind Medal, first class, in 1902, and he was made a Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire (C.I.E.) in 1909. He also played a role in promoting the art of Raja Ravi Varma.

Notable Quotes

“a monumental record of the varied phases of south Indian tribal life, the traditions, manners and customs of people. Though in some respects it may be corrected or supplemented by future research it will long retain its value as an example of out-door investigation, and will remain a veritable mine of information, which will be of value.”
