Dion Dion Fortune

Dion Fortune, born Violet Mary Firth, was a prominent British occultist, ceremonial magician, and writer active in the early 20th century. Born into an affluent family in North Wales, she later moved to England, where her early life included poetry and studies in psychology and psychoanalysis. Fortune's interest in esotericism grew through her involvement with the Theosophical Society and various occult organizations, including the Alpha et Omega. She developed a belief in spiritual entities called Ascended Masters and practiced trance mediumship to channel their teachings. This led her to co-found the Fraternity of the Inner Light, an organization dedicated to disseminating her occult philosophies. Fortune was a prolific writer, producing numerous books and articles on occult subjects, as well as seven novels that explored mystical themes. Her work significantly influenced later occult and modern Pagan movements, such as Wicca.

Born Violet Mary Firth in 1890 in North Wales, Dion Fortune hailed from a wealthy English family. Little is documented about her earliest years, though by her teens she was living in England's West Country, where she published two poetry collections. She pursued studies in psychology and psychoanalysis at the University of London and worked as a counselor. During World War I, she joined the Women's Land Army and established a soy milk company. Her deep engagement with esotericism began through the Theosophical Society, leading her to join an occult lodge and later the Alpha et Omega organization.

Fortune came to believe she received teachings from spiritual entities known as Ascended Masters, including Master Rakoczi and Master Jesus, through trance mediumship. In 1922, she and Charles Loveday published 'The Cosmic Doctrine,' which they claimed was channeled from these Masters. Dissatisfied with the Theosophical Society's direction, Fortune split from it to establish the Community of the Inner Light, later renamed the Fraternity of the Inner Light. Alongside Loveday, she set up centers in Glastonbury and London, published a magazine, and lectured publicly to promote the group's growth.

Fortune's occult path included mentorship from Irish occultist Theodore Moriarty, whose teachings influenced her fictional characters. She was initiated into the Alpha et Omega, an order stemming from the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, where she gained a foundational understanding of the Hermetic Qabalah. During World War II, she organized meditative projects to protect Britain. She anticipated a post-war Age of Aquarius but died of leukemia shortly after the war's end. Fortune is recognized as a key figure in early 20th-century occultism, and the Fraternity she founded continued to spread her teachings, with her novels notably impacting modern Paganism and Wicca.
