Devi Stern

Ahilyabai Holkar, born in 1725, was a prominent queen of Indore within the Maratha Empire, establishing Maheshwar as the dynasty's seat. She is celebrated for her just governance, dedication to educational and cultural advancement, and extensive socio-cultural projects, including the construction of temples, ghats, and charitable rest houses across India.

After the deaths of her husband and father-in-law, Ahilyabai took charge of the Holkar dynasty, defending Indore and leading armies. She is widely respected as a legendary queen of the Maratha Malwa kingdom, leaving a legacy of public welfare and socio-cultural development. Her charitable endowments, known as Mathas, were spread throughout India. She is also remembered as a holy woman, referred to as Devi Ahilya, and her contributions to Hindu temples, including the rebuilding of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, and her support for women's education and empowerment are particularly noted.

Ahilyabai Holkar was born in 1725 in a village in Maharashtra into a Marathi family. Her father served as a village Patil. Her life took a significant turn when Malhar Rao Holkar, a military commander and ruler of Malwa, noticed her piety during a temple service. Impressed, he arranged her marriage to his son, Khanderao Holkar, in 1733. By the time of her marriage, her father-in-law had already achieved considerable power and influence within the Maratha Confederacy, becoming a key figure in North and Central India.

Ahilyabai was actively involved in state affairs from 1754, participating in diplomatic discussions and matters of finance and governance. Trained by her mother-in-law in administration and politics, she demonstrated remarkable administrative and diplomatic skills. Following the deaths of her husband and son, she became the de facto ruler of Indore. She effectively led Maratha armies against rebellions, securing victories despite limited resources. Her reign was characterized by a commitment to justice, which was described as both swift and compassionate, and a focus on reforming and restraining where necessary.

Ahilyabai Holkar is renowned for her extensive charitable activities and public works. She commissioned numerous temples, ghats, schools (Pathasalas), and charitable rest houses (Dharmashalas) throughout India, contributing significantly to Indian architecture and the preservation of sacred sites. Her personal funds were dedicated to these endeavors, establishing a legacy of philanthropy. She is revered as a holy woman, Devi Ahilya, and her efforts extended to the rebuilding of significant temples, such as the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, and promoting women's education and empowerment.
