Trained by her mother-in-law in administration and politics, she demonstrated remarkable administrative and diplomatic skills. Following the deaths of her husband and son, she became the de facto ruler of Indore. She effectively led Maratha armies against rebellions, securing victories despite limited resources. Her reign was characterized by a commitment to justice, which was described as both swift and compassionate, and a focus on reforming and restraining where necessary.

Ahilyabai Holkar is renowned for her extensive charitable activities and public works. She commissioned numerous temples, ghats, schools (Pathasalas), and charitable rest houses (Dharmashalas) throughout India, contributing significantly to Indian architecture and the preservation of sacred sites.
