David Mitchell, born in 1969, is an English author celebrated for his novels, screenplays, and translations. He has authored nine novels, with "number9dream" and "Cloud Atlas" notably being shortlisted for the Booker Prize. His literary career began with "Ghostwritten," which received the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize. Mitchell's work often features intricate narratives and recurring characters, forming what he terms a 'macronovel.' He and his wife, Keiko Yoshida, have translated books by Naoki Higashida, an autistic Japanese boy, including "The Reason I Jump" and "Fall Down 7 Times Get Up 8." Mitchell described "The Reason I Jump" as a "revelatory godsend," finding it offered practical insights and a deeper understanding of his own autistic son, highlighting the philosophical and empathetic dimensions of this work.

Mitchell's personal experiences have significantly shaped his writing and public engagement. He has spoken openly about his stammer, relating to the portrayal in "The King's Speech" and noting that writing "Black Swan Green," narrated by a character with a stammer, was a form of self-disclosure. His role as a parent to a severely autistic son has also been a profound influence, leading him to describe the experience as fostering greater strength, compassion, and clarity about the human condition. This perspective informs his translation work and his understanding of communication and consciousness.
