Linda Carroll, born Linda Anne Risi on April 7, 1944, is an American writer, marriage counselor, and family therapist. She gained public attention in 1993 when a former patient, fugitive Katherine Ann Power, surrendered to authorities after decades on the run. Carroll is recognized for her work as a couples therapist and as the author of three books, including her most recent, "Love Cycles: The Five Essential Stages of Lasting Love" (2014). Born and raised in San Francisco, she is the daughter of novelist Paula Fox and has a background that includes being adopted by an Italian-descent family. She later reconnected with her birth mother and adopted the surname Carroll. Carroll has been married twice and has five children. Her memoir, "Her Mother's Daughter," published in 2006, recounts her life and relationship with her daughter, Courtney Love, and her birth mother, Paula Fox. The book generated controversy, with Love's representative disputing Carroll's account of their relationship.

Linda Carroll was born Linda Anne Risi in San Francisco on April 7, 1944. Her birth mother was writer Paula Fox, who was 20 at the time. Carroll was given up for adoption at birth and raised by Emil and Louella Risi, a Catholic couple of Italian heritage, in San Francisco. She reconnected with her birth mother, Paula Fox, later in life, and also discovered her maternal grandfather was screenwriter Paul Hervey Fox and her grandmother was Cuban writer Elsie Fox. Carroll adopted the surname Carroll after the passing of a friend with that name. She graduated from high school in 1961.

Carroll married writer Hank Harrison in 1963, with whom she had her daughter Courtney Michelle Harrison in 1964. After divorcing Harrison, she moved to Oregon with Courtney. She later married Frank Rodríguez, with whom she had two more daughters. After completing her bachelor's degree in Oregon, she lived in New Zealand for a period before returning to Oregon in the 1980s to pursue a master's degree in counseling. She established a career as a therapist. Alongside her veterinarian husband, Tim Barraud, Carroll developed a couples course drawing from established therapeutic models and their own insights. As of 2015, she has five children and ten grandchildren.

Linda Carroll is the author of three books. Her memoir, "Her Mother's Daughter: A Memoir of the Mother I Never Knew and of My Daughter, Courtney Love" (2006), details her life, her relationship with her birth mother Paula Fox, and her daughter Courtney Love. The book sparked a public disagreement regarding the accuracy of Carroll's portrayal of her relationship with Love. Her other published works include "Remember Who You Are: Seven Stages on a Woman's Journey of Spirit" (2008) and "Love Cycles: The Five Essential Stages of Lasting Love" (2014), which explores relationship dynamics. Carroll also gained national notice in 1993 due to her connection with a patient who became a fugitive.
