Basil Copper was an English author known for horror, detective fiction, and continuing the Solar Pons character.

Basil Frederick Albert Copper (1924-2013) was an English writer and former journalist who transitioned to full-time writing in 1970. He gained recognition for his horror and detective fiction, and particularly for his series of Solar Pons stories, which carried on the legacy of August Derleth's tribute to Sherlock Holmes. Copper's literary output also included the acclaimed Lovecraftian novella "Beyond the Reef" and the novel "The Great White Space," which explored themes influenced by Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. Beyond his writing, Copper was a dedicated film collector, amassing over a thousand titles and founding the Tunbridge Wells Vintage Film Society. His work has been translated into numerous languages and adapted for television.

Literary Contributions and Style

Copper's writing career began with early publications in his teens, but his professional debut was the short story "The Spider" in 1964. He developed a significant relationship with August Derleth's Arkham House, publishing collections like "From Evil's Pillow" and "And Afterward, the Dark," alongside novels such as "Necropolis." His macabre tales, including "The Academy of Pain" and "The Candle in the Skull," earned critical acclaim. The novel "The Great White Space" delved into esoteric themes, drawing inspiration from Poe and Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos, and featured a character paying homage to Clark Ashton Smith. Copper also contributed to the Cthulhu Mythos with his short story "Shaft Number 247." His writing was characterized by its ability to engage the imagination, described by Donald Wandrei as luring it "beyond the outposts of reality."

Beyond the Macabre: Diverse Writing and Interests

While known for his contributions to horror and the supernatural, Copper also penned a lengthy series of 58 hard-boiled detective novels featuring Mike Faraday, often set in Los Angeles, which he researched through maps and films. He also ghostwrote novels for the comic hero The Phantom. Copper's interests extended beyond writing; he was an avid collector of historic film material, possessing over a thousand titles by 1989. He founded and ran the Tunbridge Wells Vintage Film Society for two decades, exclusively screening films from his personal collection, and frequently lectured on film at various organizations. His personal life included a marriage to French-born Annie Guerin since 1960, and he was a longtime resident of Sevenoaks, Kent.

Recognition and Legacy

Basil Copper's literary achievements garnered significant recognition. He was honored by the Mark Twain Society of America as a Knight of Mark Twain for his impact on modern fiction and received multiple accolades from the Praed Street Irregulars for his Solar Pons work. He maintained a long membership in the Crime Writers' Association, serving as chairman. In 2010, he was presented with the inaugural World Horror Convention Lifetime Achievement Award. A bio-bibliography, "Basil Copper: A Life in Books," was published in 2008, earning the 2009 British Fantasy Award for Best Non-Fiction. His collected macabre tales were also published in a substantial multi-volume set in 2010.
