Suzanne Collins, born August 10, 1962, is an American author and television writer recognized for her popular young adult dystopian series, The Hunger Games, and the children's fantasy series, The Underland Chronicles. Her early life, marked by frequent moves due to her father's military career, included studies in theater and telecommunications, culminating in a Master of Fine Arts in dramatic writing. Collins began her professional writing career in television, contributing to various children's shows before transitioning to literature.
Her literary career gained significant momentum with The Underland Chronicles, a five-book series inspired partly by Alice in Wonderland. However, it was The Hunger Games, released in 2008, that achieved widespread international acclaim. This series, influenced by Greek mythology and her father's military background, explores themes of poverty, war, and survival. The success of The Hunger Games led to film adaptations and established Collins as a highly influential and best-selling author, with her works frequently appearing on best-seller lists and being adapted into films.
Early Life and Education
Suzanne Collins was born on August 10, 1962, in Hartford, Connecticut. Her father was a U.S. Air Force officer who served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, leading the family to move frequently, spending time in Europe, particularly Brussels, and various parts of the eastern United States. As a child, Collins enjoyed reading, gymnastics, and exploring the outdoors. She pursued higher education in the arts, graduating from the Alabama School of Fine Arts with a degree in Theater Arts in 1980. She continued her studies at Indiana University Bloomington, earning a Bachelor of Arts in theater and telecommunications in 1985, followed by a Master of Fine Arts in dramatic writing from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 1989.
Career Beginnings in Television
Collins initiated her writing career in 1991, focusing on children's television programming. She contributed to numerous shows for Nickelodeon, including titles like Clarissa Explains It All and The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo, as well as animated series such as Little Bear and Oswald. She also served as head writer for Clifford's Puppy Days, a spin-off from PBS. Her work on the animated Christmas special, Santa, Baby!, earned her a Writers Guild of America nomination. A pivotal moment in her career occurred after meeting children's author James Proimos, which inspired her to begin writing her own children's books.
The Underland Chronicles and The Hunger Games
Collins's first major literary endeavor was The Underland Chronicles, a children's fantasy series that began with Gregor the Overlander in 2003. The inspiration for this series reportedly came from contemplating the likelihood of falling down a manhole versus a rabbit hole. She completed the five-book series between 2003 and 2007. In 2008, Scholastic Press published The Hunger Games, the first installment of her young adult dystopian series. This work drew inspiration from the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, as well as insights from her father's military career regarding the impacts of war, poverty, and starvation. The trilogy, consisting of The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay, achieved immense popularity, leading to film adaptations and widespread critical and commercial success.

Following the success of The Hunger Games trilogy, Collins continued to expand the universe. In May 2020, she released a prequel titled The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which explores the early life of the antagonist, President Coriolanus Snow. This novel was also adapted into a film. In March 2025, Sunrise on the Reaping was released, focusing on the 50th Hunger Games.
