Established in 1856, Elphinstone College stands as one of Mumbai's oldest educational institutions. It played a crucial role in the development of higher education in the city, even contributing to the establishment of the University of Mumbai. Initially established under the Bombay Native Education Society and named after Mountstuart Elphinstone, the college was formally constituted in 1835 and began classes in 1836. It became a separate entity in 1856 and later affiliated with the University of Mumbai in 1860. The college's heritage building, a Grade I heritage structure with Gothic architecture, is a recognized landmark in South Mumbai. Elphinstone College has also been a center for significant cultural and technical festivals, attracting participation from numerous institutions across India.

In recent academic history, Elphinstone College transitioned from its affiliation with the University of Mumbai in 2019 to become a constituent college of the newly formed Dr. Homi Bhabha State University. It continues to offer undergraduate programs in various disciplines through its senior college and secondary education through its junior college.

The college building itself is a significant landmark, recognized for its Gothic and Romanesque Transitional style architecture. Classified as a Grade I heritage structure, it is a prominent symbol of South Mumbai's historical character. The original building, designed by James Trubshawe, was completed in 1888. In recognition of its cultural significance and preservation efforts, Elphinstone College was honored with the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2004. This architectural legacy contributes to the college's esteemed position within the city.

Elphinstone College provides a comprehensive academic experience, comprising both junior and senior colleges. The senior college offers undergraduate degrees in arts, science, and commerce, with specific programs including B.Sc. in Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Life Sciences; B.A. in Economics, English, Geography, Hindi, History, Mathematics, Statistics, Marathi, Sociology, and Psychology; and B.Comm. The junior college caters to higher secondary education in arts, commerce, and science. Beyond academics, the college fosters a dynamic campus life through major events like Maharashtrotsav, a national-level cultural festival, and TechStar, a technology-focused festival, attracting widespread participation from students across India.
