Clifford D Simak

Clifford Donald Simak (1904–1988) was an American journalist and science fiction author recognized for his distinctive "pastoral" style. Born in Wisconsin to Czech immigrants, he pursued a long career in journalism, notably with the Minneapolis Star and Tribune, while also developing a prolific writing career. His early interest in science fiction, sparked by H.G. Wells, led him to publish in pulp magazines, eventually becoming a regular contributor during the Golden Age of Science Fiction. Simak earned numerous accolades, including multiple Hugo Awards and a Nebula Award, and was honored as a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America and an inaugural Bram Stoker Award winner for Lifetime Achievement.

An example is the encounter with "The Wailer" in "Special Deliverance," a creature whose nature and purpose remained elusive.
