Gerald Ford served as the 38th U.S. President, navigating Watergate, economic turmoil, and foreign policy shifts.

Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr., born Leslie Lynch King Jr., served as the 38th President of the United States from 1974 to 1977. He ascended to the presidency following Richard Nixon's resignation, having previously served as Vice President. Ford's tenure was marked by the lingering effects of the Watergate scandal and significant economic challenges, including high inflation and recession.

Before his time in the White House, Ford had a long career in public service, representing Michigan in the U.S. House of Representatives for nearly 25 years, eventually becoming House minority leader. He also served on the Warren Commission. Ford's unique path to the presidency included being the first individual appointed Vice President under the 25th Amendment. His presidency saw the end of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War and the signing of the Helsinki Accords, a step toward détente during the Cold War.

Early Life and Education

Born Leslie Lynch King Jr. in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1913, Gerald Ford's parents separated shortly after his birth. His mother remarried Gerald Rudolff Ford, and the young boy was thereafter known as Gerald Ford Jr. Raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he excelled as an athlete in high school. Ford attended the University of Michigan, where he was a standout football player, contributing to national championships. Despite turning down professional football offers, his athletic career continued with appearances in college all-star games. He graduated with a degree in economics before pursuing legal studies.

Legal and Military Service

Ford attended Yale Law School, working as a boxing coach and assistant football coach during his studies. He was admitted to the Connecticut bar and later the Michigan bar. His involvement in the America First Committee during the lead-up to World War II marked an early political engagement. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Ford enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve, serving from 1942 to 1946. He was commissioned as an ensign and served in various capacities during the war.

Congressional Career

Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1948, Ford represented Michigan for nearly 25 years. During his extensive tenure, he became known for his dedication and rose to the position of House minority leader. He was also a member of the Warren Commission, tasked with investigating the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. In 1973, Ford made history by becoming the first person appointed Vice President under the provisions of the 25th Amendment, following Spiro Agnew's resignation.

Presidency and Post-Presidency

Ford assumed the presidency in August 1974 after Richard Nixon's resignation. His term was significantly influenced by the Watergate scandal and a challenging economic climate. He made the controversial decision to pardon Nixon. In foreign policy, his administration saw the end of the Vietnam War and the signing of the Helsinki Accords. After leaving office, Ford remained active in the Republican Party, though his moderate stances sometimes created friction. He developed a notable friendship with his successor, Jimmy Carter. Ford passed away in 2006, remembered as the only U.S. president to have served without being elected to either the presidency or vice presidency.
