Seong Gi-hun, also known as Player 456, is the central character in the South Korean television series Squid Game. A divorced former chauffeur and gambling addict, he becomes deeply indebted and joins a clandestine survival competition. This contest features 455 other participants vying for a substantial cash prize by playing children's games, where failure results in death. Throughout the series, Gi-hun forms alliances with fellow players such as Ali Abdul, Cho Sang-woo, Kang Sae-byeok, and Oh Il-nam, while also making adversaries. His journey is marked by personal struggles, drawing inspiration from the creator's own life experiences, including gambling issues and feelings of failure. The character's portrayal has garnered critical attention for its reflection of socio-economic issues in South Korea.

Seong Gi-hun was conceived by series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, with actor Lee Jung-jae bringing the character to life. Hwang incorporated elements from his own life into Gi-hun's background, including details about his neighborhood, a childhood friend's name, aspects of his uncle, and his personal experiences with gambling and setbacks. For subsequent seasons, Hwang envisioned Gi-hun as a figure akin to Don Quixote, one who would impulsively rebel against the established system. Lee Jung-jae described Gi-hun as the most emotionally resonant character he has portrayed. The character's development also involves a shift from a more lighthearted persona to a darker one in later seasons, a transition that has been acknowledged and praised.

Gi-hun's story begins with him stealing from his mother to gamble, leading to further debt and his recruitment into the Squid Game. Initially, he votes to leave the game with a majority of players but rejoins out of desperation to cover his mother's medical expenses and prevent his daughter from moving abroad. He navigates complex relationships within the game, forming bonds with Ali, Sang-woo, Sae-byeok, and Il-nam, while clashing with figures like Jang Deok-su. A significant turning point occurs when he discovers Oh Il-nam, the old man he befriended, is the mastermind behind the games. After winning the prize money, Gi-hun experiences profound guilt and changes his appearance. He dedicates himself to helping others affected by the games and ultimately decides to re-enter the competition with the goal of dismantling it, confronting the Front Man.

Seong Gi-hun's character was generally well-received in the first season, with Lee Jung-jae earning accolades, including a Screen Actors Guild Award and an Emmy, for his performance. Critics noted the character's narrative parallels with real-world socio-economic challenges in South Korea, such as the impact of the 1997 Asian financial crisis. While his initial portrayal was lauded, Gi-hun's actions in subsequent seasons received more mixed reviews, with some critics finding his decisions frustrating or illogical. Nevertheless, Lee's performance continued to be recognized for its ability to convey a wide emotional range, shifting from vulnerability to determination.
