Alain Gheerbrant (1920-2013) was a multifaceted French figure involved in avant-garde publishing, exploration, and authorship. He established K Éditeur, a publishing house that released works by prominent surrealist and experimental writers such as Antonin Artaud and Georges Bataille. Gheerbrant played a role in fostering artistic connections, notably introducing artist Hans Bellmer to Bataille. His adventurous spirit led him to conduct the Orinoco-Amazon expedition from 1948 to 1950, documenting his travels in "L'Expédition Orénoque-Amazone." During this expedition, he is recognized as the first Westerner to establish peaceful contact with the Yanomami people and to traverse the Parima Mountains.

Beyond his expeditions, Gheerbrant contributed significantly to the study of symbolism with the "Dictionnaire des symboles" (Dictionary of Symbols), a comprehensive work co-edited with Jean Chevalier. Gheerbrant was instrumental in facilitating creative dialogues between artists. A notable instance was his role in May 1946, when he introduced the German artist Hans Bellmer to Georges Bataille, suggesting a potential collaboration centered on their shared obsessions. Gheerbrant described this proposed dialogue as a fusion of Bellmer's precise, Nordic sensibilities with Bataille's nocturnal, romantic imagination, a project that received immediate approval from both.

Between 1948 and 1950, Alain Gheerbrant led a significant two-year expedition through the Orinoco and Amazon river basins. This extensive journey resulted in his book, "L'Expédition Orénoque-Amazone" (1952). His exploration made him the first Westerner known to have made peaceful contact with the Yanomami indigenous people. Furthermore, Gheerbrant achieved the distinction of being the first to cross the Parima Mountains during this period. His experiences were later documented in the 1952 film "Des hommes qu'on appelle sauvages" (Men We Call Savages), offering a visual record of his ethnographic encounters.
