William John Warner, widely known as Cheiro, was an Irish figure prominent in the occult circles of the early 20th century. He adopted the name Count Louis le Warner de Hamon and derived his professional moniker from 'cheiromancy,' the art of palmistry. Cheiro claimed to have learned palmistry, astrology, and Chaldean numerology during his travels in India as a young man, studying under a guru and ancient texts. He returned to London to establish a career as a diviner, attracting a clientele of notable individuals from both Europe and America.

His practice involved reading palms and making predictions for famous personalities such as Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, and Mata Hari, as well as forecasting significant global events. Cheiro meticulously documented his interactions, encouraging clients to sign his guest book and comment on his readings. His work was popular even among skeptics, with figures like Mark Twain attesting to the accuracy of his character analyses. Cheiro's writings, which focused on fortune-telling and occultism, remain in print, and his fictional work has seen modern re-publication.

Born William John Warner in Ireland, he later used the name Count Louis Hamon. Cheiro asserted that his expertise in palmistry, astrology, and numerology was acquired during his youth in India. He recounted traveling to Bombay and meeting a guru who introduced him to his village in the Konkan region. There, he was granted access to an ancient book detailing the study of hands. After two years of intensive study, he returned to London to begin his career as a palmist and fortune-teller.

Cheiro achieved considerable renown as a 'society palmist' during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His client list included prominent figures from politics, arts, and royalty, such as Mark Twain, Sarah Bernhardt, Oscar Wilde, and the Prince of Wales. He documented his sessions by having clients sign a guest book, where many offered testimonials. Cheiro also made public predictions, including the eventual return of Jews to Palestine and its renaming as Israel. His ability to accurately analyze character and foresee events drew interest even from those who were not typically inclined towards the occult.

Cheiro authored numerous books centered on fortune-telling and occult practices. Many of his works on palmistry, astrology, and numerology continue to be published and are available in various languages. His fictional work, 'A Study of Destiny,' was reissued in 2006 as part of a series dedicated to rediscovering 19th-century supernatural and speculative fiction. His book 'Titanic's Last Secrets' recounts a reading given to the chairman of the company that built the Titanic, where Cheiro predicted a struggle for life related to the ship's fate. His legacy persists through his published works, which continue to be accessible to modern readers interested in esoteric subjects.
