📅 1809 – 1896 🌍 English 📚 1 free book ⭐ Known for: Jane Eyre (1847)

Charlotte Brontë, an English novelist, is celebrated for 'Jane Eyre,' a classic exploring themes of social class and morality.

Charlotte Brontë (1816-1855) was a prominent English novelist and poet, best known for her enduring novel 'Jane Eyre.' Born into a literary family, she experienced significant personal loss early in life, including the death of her mother and two elder sisters, which profoundly influenced her writing. Her education at the Clergy Daughters' School at Cowan Bridge, marked by harsh conditions, served as the inspiration for the Lowood School in 'Jane Eyre.'

Brontë's career began with her sisters Emily and Anne, publishing a collection of poetry under pseudonyms. While her first novel, 'The Professor,' was rejected, 'Jane Eyre' achieved immediate success and critical acclaim upon its 1847 publication, though it also generated controversy. The true identities of the Brontë sisters were eventually revealed. Brontë's personal life included a brief marriage to Arthur Bell Nicholls shortly before her untimely death in 1855, possibly due to complications from pregnancy.

Early Life and Influences

Charlotte Brontë was born in 1816, the third of six children to Patrick Brontë, an Anglican curate, and Maria Branwell. Her mother's early death when Charlotte was five deeply affected her. She and her sisters were sent to the Clergy Daughters' School at Cowan Bridge, where harsh conditions and illness led to the deaths of her two elder sisters. Charlotte believed her own lifelong ill-health stemmed from this experience, and she later used the school as a model for Lowood in 'Jane Eyre.' Her father encouraged a love of reading and intellectual pursuits, introducing his children to literature and current affairs, fostering their imaginative worlds.

Literary Beginnings and 'Jane Eyre'

Alongside her sisters Emily and Anne, Charlotte attempted to establish a school, but it was unsuccessful. In 1846, they published a joint poetry collection under male pseudonyms. Charlotte's initial novel, 'The Professor,' was met with rejection, but her subsequent work, 'Jane Eyre,' published in 1847 under the pseudonym Currer Bell, became a significant success. The novel explored themes of morality, social class, and female independence, resonating with readers and establishing Brontë as a notable author. The sisters' identities were revealed in 1848, bringing Charlotte into London's literary circles.

Later Life and Legacy

Brontë's experiences in Brussels, where she studied and later taught at the Heger Pensionnat, provided inspiration for characters and settings in her work, including Constantin Heger, the school's director, who influenced the character of Rochester. After failed attempts to open her own school with her sisters, Brontë continued to write. She married Arthur Bell Nicholls, her father's curate, in 1854. Sadly, she died less than a year later in 1855, during the early stages of pregnancy. 'Jane Eyre' remains her most celebrated work, recognized as a classic of English literature for its psychological depth and social commentary.
