James Frank McGrath is an American academic specializing in the study of religion. He holds the Clarence L. Goodwin Chair in New Testament Language and Literature at Butler University. His scholarly contributions span several areas, including the origins of Christianity, Mandaean studies, critiques of the Christ myth theory, and the examination of religious themes within science fiction literature.

McGrath's academic journey includes studies at the University of Cambridge and the University of London, culminating in a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Durham. He has held teaching positions at various institutions before joining Butler University, where he has been a professor since 2002 and was appointed to his current chair in 2010. Beyond his academic work, McGrath is also recognized as the creator of a card game called "Canon."
