Charles G. Addison was an English barrister and writer known for legal texts and historical works on the Middle East and Knights Templar.

Charles Greenstreet Addison, born in 1812, was an English barrister and a writer with interests spanning historical, travel, and legal subjects. He was called to the bar in 1842 by the Inner Temple and served as a revising barrister for Kent. Addison married Frances Octavia, daughter of Lord Cringletie, and they had seven children.

His literary output included a description of a Middle Eastern journey titled 'Damascus and Palmyra' published in 1838. He also authored 'History of the Knights Templar,' which saw multiple editions, and a historical work on the Temple Church. However, Addison is most recognized for his significant legal textbooks: 'A Treatise on the Law of Contracts' (1845) and 'Wrongs and their Remedies: A Treatise on the Law of Torts' (1860). Both legal works achieved considerable success, with several editions published in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Addison passed away in 1866.

Legal Scholarship

Charles G. Addison established himself as a notable legal author with two key textbooks that became foundational in their fields. His 'Treatise on the Law of Contracts,' first published in 1845, provided a comprehensive examination of contractual agreements. Following this, in 1860, he released 'Wrongs and their Remedies: A Treatise on the Law of Torts.' This work delved into civil wrongs and the legal recourse available for them. Both of these legal texts were highly regarded, undergoing numerous revisions and editions in both Britain and America, underscoring their importance and widespread use within the legal profession and academic circles.

Historical and Travel Writing

Beyond his legal contributions, Charles G. Addison also engaged with historical and travel writing. In 1838, he published 'Damascus and Palmyra,' which documented his journey through the Middle East, offering readers insights into the regions he visited. Addison also explored historical subjects, most notably authoring a 'History of the Knights Templar.' This work, first appearing in 1842 and later in a third edition by 1852, delved into the history of the medieval military order. He further contributed to historical scholarship with a work on the Temple Church, published in 1843.
