City College, affiliated with the University of Calcutta, was founded in 1879 by Anandamohan Bose as part of the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj movement.

City College, established in Kolkata in 1879 by Anandamohan Bose, is a state government-aided public college affiliated with the University of Calcutta. Its founding was an initiative of the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj movement, a group formed by younger members of the Brahmo Samaj who differed with Keshab Chandra Sen on various social and organizational matters. The college initially offered law courses and expanded over the years to include undergraduate degrees in arts, science, and commerce, becoming one of Asia's largest colleges by 1939. It is recognized as a heritage institution in Kolkata and played a role in the Bengal Renaissance. In 1961, its branches were reorganized into separate institutions under the "City group of colleges." The college provides education across various disciplines including science, arts, and commerce.

Founding and Development

Anandamohan Bose, a proponent of the Brahmo religion, co-founded the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj in 1878 due to disagreements within the Brahmo Samaj. As the first president of the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj, Bose established the Chhatrasamaj, a student organization, in 1879. Later that year, he founded City College in Calcutta as an extension of this movement. The college began with a law department and evolved into a degree-granting institution by 1884. By 1920, it offered undergraduate programs in arts and science, followed by the establishment of a commerce department in 1939. A women's department was added in 1943. The college is situated at 102/1, Raja Rammohan Roy Sarani and shares its premises with Rammohan College and Anandamohan College.

Academic Offerings and Recognition

City College offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in arts, commerce, and science. The science faculty includes departments for Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, and Economics. The college aims to provide education to students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds in Kolkata and surrounding areas. It is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a B+ grade in 2007, and re-accredited with a B grade in 2024.

City College is considered a heritage institution in Kolkata and contributed to the Bengal Renaissance. The college has been featured in Satyajit Ray's film "Aparajito" (1956) and parts of the film "Mahan" (1996) were filmed on its premises. Its faculty has included notable figures such as Jibanananda Das, a prominent Bengali poet.
