The Booker Prize for Fiction has recognized English-language novels since 1969, with special awards celebrating its history.
The Booker Prize for Fiction has been presented annually since 1969. It is awarded to the best original, full-length novel written in English. Initially, eligibility was restricted to citizens of Commonwealth nations and the Republic of Ireland. In 2014, the prize's criteria expanded to include any work published in the United Kingdom and written in English, regardless of the author's nationality.
The prize has also celebrated its own history with special accolades. In 1993, a "Booker of Bookers" award was given to Salman Rushdie for "Midnight's Children," recognizing it as the best novel to have won the prize in its first 25 years. Later, in 2008, "Midnight's Children" also triumphed in a public vote for "The Best of the Booker" on the prize's 40th anniversary. Marking its 50th anniversary in 2018, a special "Golden Booker" was presented to Michael Ondaatje for "The English Patient."
Several authors have achieved multiple wins or nominations. Five writers have won the award twice: Margaret Atwood, Peter Carey, J. M. Coetzee, J. G. Farrell, and Hilary Mantel. The source also lists authors with multiple nominations, with Salman Rushdie receiving seven, and other authors receiving six, five, four, three, or two nominations.
