📅 1911 – 1913 🌍 British 📚 1 free book ⭐ Known for: Chazon Ish (1911)

Avraham Yeshayahu Karelitz, known as the Chazon Ish, was a prominent Belarusian-born rabbi who became a leader of Haredi Judaism in Israel.

Avraham Yeshayahu Karelitz, later known as the Chazon Ish, was born in Belarus in 1878 and became a significant figure in Orthodox Judaism. He spent the last two decades of his life, from 1933 to 1953, in Israel, where he was a leading voice in Haredi circles. Despite his eventual prominence, Karelitz was largely self-taught, receiving his initial education from his father and a private tutor. He did not attend traditional yeshivas or receive formal rabbinic ordination. His writings, particularly his magnum opus which gave him his moniker, are known for their dense and challenging style, assuming a high level of prior knowledge from the reader. He married Batya, who supported the family through her business, allowing him to dedicate himself to Torah study. His early published works appeared anonymously. He also penned a treatise against the blood libel, demonstrating his engagement with contemporary issues.

Early Life and Education

Born in Kosava, Russian Empire (modern-day Belarus), Avraham Yeshayahu Karelitz was the son of a local rabbi and grandson of a former town rabbi. His formal education was unconventional; he primarily studied with his father and a private tutor, rather than attending formal cheder or yeshiva settings. This self-directed approach to learning, which some contemporaries found unusual, meant he was largely self-taught throughout his life. His mother noted his diligent study habits even in childhood, though he himself reportedly found the process arduous, driven by a sense of duty rather than immediate enjoyment. He was described as quiet and thoughtful, with a personal commitment to speak only when his thoughts were fully formed.

Early Writings and Marriage

Karelitz's early intellectual contributions began to surface in the journal 'HaPeles' in 1901 under the pseudonym 'A.Ya.SH. from Kassava'. These initial publications, including a defense of the Hebrew calendar calculation, marked his first known printed works. Around the age of 27, he married Batya, a woman from Kvedarna. The marriage was notable as Batya was significantly older than Karelitz, and her father faced financial difficulties in meeting his obligations. Karelitz insisted on proceeding with the marriage, emphasizing the importance of not shaming a Jewish woman. In Kvedarna, Batya supported the household through her fabric business, enabling Karelitz to immerse himself in Torah study, which he pursued intensely, even delivering lessons and founding a local yeshiva.

The 'Chazon Ish' and Later Life

His seminal work, 'Chazon Ish', began publication in 1911, initially anonymously. The book's dense style and unique interpretive method, which differed from the prevailing analytical approach in the Lithuanian Torah world, made it challenging for many readers. Karelitz himself suggested that his work was intended for those who had already grappled with complex commentaries. During World War I, he and his wife became refugees, settling in Stoybtz. Although he generally avoided rabbinic positions, he unofficially served as the town's rabbi for a period when the incumbent was forced to leave. He eventually relocated to Israel, where he became a central figure in Haredi leadership until his passing in 1953.
