Billy O Callaghan

Born in Cork in 1974, Billy O'Callaghan is an Irish writer recognized for both his short fiction and novels. He grew up in the village of Douglas, where he continues to reside.

O'Callaghan's literary output began with short story collections, including 'In Exile' (2008) and 'In Too Deep' (2009), both published by Mercier Press. His third collection, 'The Things We Lose, The Things We Leave Behind' (2013), published by New Island Books, garnered significant attention and won the Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Award for Short Story of the Year. His short fiction has appeared in various international literary journals and has been translated into multiple languages. His stories have also been featured on RTÉ Radio 1.

His debut novel, 'The Dead House,' was released in 2017. O'Callaghan's novel 'My Coney Island Baby' (2019) achieved widespread international recognition, being translated into numerous languages including French, Dutch, German, Czech, Catalan, Italian, Hungarian, and Turkish. It was also shortlisted for the Royal Society of Literature's Encore Award. Subsequent works include the short story collection 'The Boatman and Other Stories' (2020) and the novels 'Life Sentences' (2021) and 'The Paper Man' (2023).
