Charles Beadle was a novelist and writer, primarily recognized for his adventure tales featured in American pulp magazines and his fictional portrayals of Parisian bohemian society. Born at sea to a ship captain, Beadle spent his youth in London and later traveled extensively, serving in the British South Africa Police during the Boer War and exploring East Africa. His writing career began in Morocco, where he resided for a period. Beadle's first known published piece was an article about a Zambezi trip in 1907, followed by his first novel, "The City of Shadows: A Romance of Morocco," in 1911. He relocated to New York City in 1916, establishing himself as a writer of authentic African adventure stories for prominent pulp magazines, as well as sea tales. His serial "Witch-Doctors" was particularly successful, later being published as a book. By the 1920s, Beadle had settled in Paris, which became his primary residence for many years, inspiring works like "The Esquimau of Montparnasse." He appears to have returned to England around 1939. Beadle continued writing until at least 1947, with his final known work being "Nameless Spy." He spent his last years in Nice, France, where he passed away in 1957.

His experiences included service in the British South Africa Police in Southern Rhodesia, where he participated in the Boer War. Following the conflict, Beadle journeyed through East Africa. He spent time in Morocco between 1908 and 1910 or early 1911, a period that coincided with the commencement of his writing endeavors.

Literary Career and Pulp Fiction

Charles Beadle's writing career officially began with the publication of "Our Trip Down the Zambezi" in The Wide World Magazine in May 1907. His first fictional work, the novel "The City of Shadows: A Romance of Morocco," was published in 1911. After arriving in New York City in 1916, Beadle carved out a niche as a writer of pulp adventure stories, contributing authentic African narratives to magazines such as Adventure, Argosy, and Short Stories. He also penned sea stories. His four-part serial "Witch-Doctors," published in Adventure in 1919, achieved significant success and was later released as a book in both the United States and London.

Parisian Life and Later Years

By 1920, Charles Beadle had established his residence in Paris, which remained his primary home for the majority of his remaining life. During this period, he explored the city's bohemian culture, producing works such as "The Esquimau of Montparnasse." Around 1939, possibly due to the outbreak of war, Beadle appears to have returned to England. His last known published contribution was the story "Nameless Spy," which appeared in Short Stories in June 1947. He concluded his life in Nice, France, passing away on January 27, 1957.
