Barry Fantoni was a British author, cartoonist, and musician known for his work with Private Eye and books on Chinese astrology.

Barry Fantoni, born in 1940, was a British creative figure recognized for his contributions as an author, cartoonist, and jazz musician. He maintained a long association with the satirical magazine Private Eye, where he developed notable characters and contributed extensively to its content. Beyond his magazine work, Fantoni explored various literary avenues, including writing books on Chinese astrology and a mystery novel. His artistic talents were also acknowledged by institutions like the National Portrait Gallery, which acquired some of his drawings.

Fantoni's early life included musical training, reflecting his parents' backgrounds. His education at art school was cut short when he was expelled, though not before he initiated several student groups. He also engaged in television and radio, hosting a BBC show that highlighted contemporary arts and appearing on other programs. His creative output extended to illustrating sheet music. Fantoni passed away in 2025.

Contributions to Private Eye and Satire

Barry Fantoni was a significant figure at the satirical magazine Private Eye, joining its editorial staff in 1963 and remaining involved until 2010. During his tenure, he was instrumental in creating some of the magazine's most memorable characters and contributed to nearly every issue published within his period of involvement. His work for Private Eye also included the creation of the fictional football club Neasden F.C. Furthermore, Fantoni was the mind behind the persona of E. J. Thribb (17½), a fictitious poet-in-residence for the magazine. Thribb's poems, characterized by their distinctive opening "So, farewell then...", often paid tribute to recently deceased celebrities, frequently incorporating their catchphrases or signature tunes, and sometimes featuring recurring characters like Keith and his mother.

Literary and Artistic Pursuits

Beyond his extensive work with Private Eye, Barry Fantoni authored several books. Notably, he delved into the subject of Chinese astrology, publishing works that explored its principles. He also penned a mystery novel, which featured an elderly private investigator named Harry Lipkin and was set in Miami. Fantoni's artistic talents were recognized by the National Portrait Gallery in London, which acquired 17 of his drawings in 2006. These included portraits of various public figures, such as comedians Bruce Forsyth and Frankie Howerd, and politician Harold Wilson. The gallery also holds photographic portraits of Fantoni himself, underscoring his presence in the cultural landscape.
