Countess Barcynska, a prolific British author, wrote over 130 works under various pseudonyms, including mystical themes.

Marguerite Florence Laura Jarvis, who wrote under the name Countess Barcynska among other pseudonyms, was a British author active throughout the twentieth century. Born in Burma, she was educated as an actress in England. Her writing career began in earnest after her marriage to Armiger Barczinsky, who encouraged her literary pursuits. She achieved significant success, particularly with her novel "The Honeypot" in 1916, which, like many of her works, was adapted for film. Her prolific output, exceeding 130 titles between 1911 and 1946, included novels, short stories, memoirs, and biographies, often published under the name Oliver Sandys.

Her life was marked by two marriages and periods of living in various locations in England and Wales. In the 1940s, she published autobiographical works and a biography of her second husband, Caradoc Evans. Near the end of her life, her literary market declined, and she received a pension for her contributions. Despite her prolific career, not all of her catalogued works are readily available in libraries. She died in 1964 in Shrewsbury.

Literary Career and Pseudonyms

Marguerite Florence Laura Jarvis was a prolific British author who utilized numerous pseudonyms throughout her career, most notably Oliver Sandys and Countess Barcynska. Her literary output spanned from 1911 to 1946, encompassing well over 130 works, including novels, short stories, memoirs, and biographies. Her autobiography, published in 1941, listed 38 novels written as Oliver Sandys and 21 as Countess Barcynska, with many of these also being adapted into films. She achieved considerable success, particularly before and after World War I, with her novel "The Honeypot" (1916) being a notable early success and adapted for cinema. By the mid-1920s, she was a best-selling author, earning substantial income from book sales and film rights.

Esoteric and Mystical Themes

While primarily known for her popular fiction, Countess Barcynska's work also touched upon esoteric and mystical subjects. One of her later books, "The Miracle Stone of Wales" (1957), published under the pseudonym Oliver Sandys, explored themes related to the occult. This work was inspired by an experience with a "cunning folk" individual named "Old Griff" from Plynlimon, who reportedly gave her a stone. Her literary output also included memoirs, one of which specifically dealt with mysticism and faith healing, indicating a personal interest in these less conventional spiritual and philosophical areas.

Later Life and Legacy

In her later years, Marguerite Jarvis settled in Shropshire and later in Wales, where she continued to write, with "Quaint Place" (1952) being set in the nearby Church Stretton. By the 1950s, the market for her particular style of fiction had significantly diminished, and she relied on a pension for literary services. Her posthumous novel, "Madame Adastra," was published in 1964. She died in 1964 and was buried in the cemetery of the New Cross Horeb chapel, alongside her second husband.
