Bangalore Venkata Raman

Bangalore Venkata Raman, born in 1912, was a highly influential Indian astrologer and prolific author. He dedicated his life to promoting and gaining respect for Vedic astrology, also known as Hindu astrology, both within India and internationally. Raman was instrumental in establishing the 'The Astrological Magazine' in 1936, serving as its editor for over six decades. His efforts extended beyond writing and editing, as he founded the Indian Council Of Astrological Sciences in 1984 to standardize the study and practice of Vedic astrology in India. He also played a key role in the establishment of the American Council of Vedic Astrology and was a patron founder of the British Association of Vedic Astrology. Raman lectured widely across the globe, presenting on various aspects of astrology, Hindu astronomy, philosophy, and Indian culture at universities and international conferences. His contributions were recognized with honorary doctorates from Akhila Bharateeya Samskrita Sammelana and Kumaon University. He passed away in 1998, leaving a significant legacy in the field of astrology.

Following his passing, the magazine continued under the stewardship of his children until its eventual relaunch as 'The Astrological eMagazine' by his son. Raman's scholarly contributions and expertise were formally recognized by academic institutions. In 1968, he was awarded a Doctor of Literature degree by the Akhila Bharateeya Samskrita Sammelana, and in 1976, Kumaon University conferred upon him an honorary Doctor of Letters degree.

B.V. Raman was a forward-thinking proponent of astrology, notably delivering a lecture titled 'Relevance of Astrology in Modern Times' at the United Nations in 1970. This address garnered considerable attention within diplomatic circles and underscored his conviction that astrology is a science. He also championed the application of astrology to contemporary issues, as evidenced by his book 'Astrology in Predicting Weather and Earthquakes.' Raman's work aimed to demystify astrological principles for a broader audience, evident in titles like 'Astrology for Beginners' and 'A Manual Of Hindu Astrology.' He also explored specific predictive techniques and horary astrology, contributing to the practical application of the discipline.
