Cristóbal Mendoza was Venezuela's first president, a lawyer, and a key figure in its independence movement.

Cristóbal Mendoza was a Venezuelan lawyer, politician, and academic who played a pivotal role in the early years of Venezuelan independence. He earned degrees in philosophy and law, eventually becoming a practicing lawyer in various Venezuelan cities. Mendoza became involved in the insurgent movement against Spanish rule in 1810 and was elected to represent Barinas in the Constituent Congress. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed as the first president of the First Republic of Venezuela, serving as part of a triumvirate. During his term, he initiated the war for independence, authored the Declaration of Independence, and contributed to the first constitution. Following periods of exile and return, Mendoza held several gubernatorial positions and later served as Mayor of the Department of Venezuela. His contributions to the fight for independence and the establishment of the republic were significant, and Venezuela later established National Lawyer Day in his honor.

Early Life and Legal Foundation

Born José Cristóbal Hurtado de Mendoza y Montilla in Trujillo, Venezuela, on June 23, 1772, he received his early education from his father and at a Franciscan Monastery. He pursued higher education in Caracas, earning a bachelor's degree in philosophy before moving to Santo Domingo to obtain a doctorate in both canon and civil law. Returning to Venezuela in his early twenties, Mendoza began his legal career, working in Trujillo and Mérida. He briefly served as a philosophy professor before completing his legal training in Caracas, receiving his lawyer's title in 1796. He then relocated to Barinas, where he continued his law practice and became known for defending local indigenous groups.

The Path to the Presidency

In 1807, Mendoza was elected Mayor of Barinas. His appointment faced scrutiny but was ultimately upheld. A turning point came on April 19, 1810, when he joined the movement against the Spanish crown. He was elected secretary of the local Board of Government in Barinas and was chosen, along with his brother, to represent Barinas in the Constituent Congress of Venezuela. Before he could take his seat, however, he was appointed president of the newly formed First Republic of Venezuela on March 5, 1811. This marked his ascension to the highest office during a critical period of the independence struggle.

Leadership During Independence

As the first president of the First Republic of Venezuela (1811-1812), Mendoza was part of an executive triumvirate that rotated leadership. He served his initial term starting April 25, 1811. During this period, he was instrumental in initiating the war for independence against Spanish loyalists and is credited with authoring the Venezuelan Declaration of Independence, proclaimed on July 5, 1811. He also participated in drafting the republic's first constitution, promulgated in December 1811. His term concluded in March 1812 when a new triumvirate took power.

Exile and Continued Service

Following the fall of the First Republic in 1813 due to a royalist invasion, Mendoza went into exile in Grenada. He later joined Simón Bolívar's efforts to liberate South America, serving as governor of Mérida and later Caracas. After fleeing Caracas again in 1814, he moved to Trinidad. During his time in Trinidad, from 1819 to 1820, he actively contributed to the independence cause through political writings for the Correo del Orinoco. He returned to Venezuela after independence was secured and held positions such as Justice Minister of Gran Colombia and later Mayor of the Department of Venezuela, serving until his resignation in 1828.
