Aśvaghoṣa, believed to have lived between approximately 80 and 150 CE, was a significant Indian Buddhist figure renowned as a philosopher, dramatist, poet, musician, and orator. He was born in Saketa (modern Ayodhya) and is credited as the first Sanskrit dramatist and a preeminent Indian poet before Kālidāsa. Aśvaghoṣa composed in Classical Sanskrit, a departure from the earlier use of Pāli and Prakrit in Buddhist literature, and may have been affiliated with the Sarvāstivāda or Mahāsaṅghika schools. His life story, preserved through a Chinese translation, describes his transformation from a wandering ascetic into a learned monk after being defeated in a debate by the elder Pārśva. This conversion is a pivotal part of his traditional biography, which also recounts his capture by King Kaniṣka and the subsequent event where his preaching so captivated horses that he earned the name Aśvaghoṣa, meaning 'Horse-Cry'.

Aśvaghoṣa is recognized as a pioneering figure in Sanskrit drama and a leading Indian poet. His literary output, composed in Classical Sanskrit, marked a significant shift in Buddhist literary tradition. He authored the epic poem *Buddhacarita* (Acts of the Buddha), which was widely read across India and Southeast Asia, celebrated for its concise yet profound presentation of Buddhist doctrine. Another notable work is *Saundarananda*, a poem detailing the conversion of Nanda, the Buddha's half-brother, focusing on Buddhist teachings and ascetic practices. A fragment of his drama, *Śāriputraprakaraṇa*, also survives, underscoring his multifaceted literary talents.

Beyond his well-established works, several other texts have been attributed to Aśvaghoṣa, though their authorship is debated. These include the *Tridaṇḍamālā* and the *Śokavinodana*. While he was once thought to be the author of *The Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana*, modern scholarship places its composition in China. The text *Vajrasuchi*, a critique of the Vedic class system, has also been linked to Aśvaghoṣa. Its discovery and translation by Brian Houghton Hodgson in the 19th century sparked significant scholarly interest, with the name 'Ashu Ghosa' leading to speculation about its connection to the historical Aśvaghoṣa.

Traditional accounts depict Aśvaghoṣa's journey from a formidable ascetic, skilled in debate, to a devoted Buddhist monk. His conversion is famously attributed to a debate with the elder Pārśva, a encounter that led to his ordination. Later, during a siege by the Kuṣāna king, Aśvaghoṣa was offered as tribute. His profound spiritual influence was demonstrated when horses, presented with their favorite food, were so captivated by his Dharma preaching that they listened with tears, earning him the epithet 'Horse-Cry.' This narrative highlights his mastery of spiritual power and his significant role in the propagation of the Dharma.
