Born on March 7, 1942, in Albany, Georgia, Paul Preuss is an American writer known for his contributions to science fiction and science journalism. He also provides science consulting services to the film industry. Preuss has authored numerous original novels and contributed to established series, notably writing novels within Arthur C. Clarke's Venus Prime universe, drawing inspiration from Clarke's existing characters and settings.

His early life involved frequent moves due to his father's Air Force service, with the family eventually settling in Albuquerque. The environment of Sandia Base, where his father worked on nuclear bomb testing, exposed him to scientists who later influenced his fictional character development. Preuss received his education at Yale University, where he formed friendships with Sidney Mintz and Jean Rouch. He also served as a consulting editor for the Dr. Bones book series.
