Midsomer Murders is a British television detective drama that has been broadcast on ITV since 1997. The series originated from Caroline Graham's novels featuring Chief Inspector Barnaby, with Anthony Horowitz undertaking the initial adaptation for television.
The show's lead detective, DCI Tom Barnaby, was played by John Nettles from the program's inception in March 1997 until February 2011. Nettles appeared in a total of 81 episodes during his tenure. Following Nettles' departure, the role of the lead detective was assumed by Neil Dudgeon, who portrays DCI John Barnaby, the younger cousin of Tom Barnaby. DCI John Barnaby also works within the Causton CID, having relocated from Brighton. As of late 2025, the series has aired 138 episodes across 24 seasons in the UK, with a total of 140 episodes released globally.
