The Coretta Scott King Award, established by the American Library Association's Coretta Scott King Book Award Round Table, is an annual recognition for exceptional books created by African American authors and illustrators. It specifically aims to celebrate works that reflect the African American experience and promote universal human values. The award was initiated in 1970 to address the underrepresentation of minority writers, inspired by a desire to acknowledge their contributions when major literary awards like the Newbery and Caldecott did not. Over time, the award has expanded its scope to include honors for illustrators, as well as recognizing runner-up "Honor Books" and a "John Steptoe Award for New Talent" since 1996. Furthermore, the program bestows the "Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement" to individuals who have made significant contributions to African American children's literature and its promotion.

The award's inception stemmed from a discussion among librarians and a publisher at an American Library Association meeting in 1969, who felt a lack of recognition for authors of color. The name was chosen to honor Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King, symbolizing their commitment to equality and a welcoming world. The first author award was presented in 1970, with illustrator recognition added in 1974. The award gained official ALA unit status in 1982, solidifying its importance within the literary community. Winning books and honor books are marked with a distinct award seal.

The concept for the Coretta Scott King Award emerged from a recognized need among African American librarians and a publisher to highlight the work of minority authors, who were not being acknowledged by existing prestigious awards like the Newbery and Caldecott Medals. This initiative began in 1969, leading to the first author award in 1970. The award's scope broadened significantly in 1974 to include illustrators, and subsequently, runner-up "Honor Books" for both authors (starting in 1978) and illustrators (starting in 1981) were introduced. The award's administrative structure also evolved, moving from initial sponsorship by library associations to becoming an officially recognized unit of the American Library Association in 1982, eventually affiliating with the Ethnic and Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table (EMIERT) and in 2022 becoming its own official Round Table.

Beyond the primary author and illustrator awards, the Coretta Scott King Awards program has expanded to include other significant recognitions. The "John Steptoe Award for New Talent," established in 1996, is given occasionally to encourage emerging authors or illustrators. A more prominent addition is the "Coretta Scott King–Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement," initiated in 2010. This award honors individuals for their sustained contributions to children's literature by African Americans, recognizing either creators (writers or illustrators) or practitioners who actively engage youth with this literature through programs and activities. The award's influence is comparable to that of the Newbery and Caldecott Medals, with its potential for use in educational settings and classroom projects.
