Andrew Lang (1844–1912) was a prolific Scottish poet, novelist, critic, and anthropologist. These collections, which he edited, were significantly compiled and translated by his wife, Leonora Blanche Lang, and a team of assistants.

Beyond his popular fairy tale anthologies, Lang was a foundational figure in "psychical research," investigating folklore, mythology, and religion through an anthropological lens. He sought to challenge prevailing rationalist views by examining spiritualism and animism, drawing parallels between ancient myths and contemporary occult interests. His academic work included contributions to classical scholarship, with notable prose translations of Homer, and historical studies, often focusing on Scottish figures and mysteries. Lang's broad intellectual curiosity and diverse output solidified his reputation as a versatile and influential writer of his era.

Andrew Lang's most enduring legacy lies in his extensive work on folklore, mythology, and religion. Influenced by early scholars of folklore, Lang's own research explored the origins and diffusion of myths and customs. His book 'Custom and Myth' (1884) was an early publication in this field. In 'Myth, Ritual and Religion' (1887), he proposed that seemingly irrational elements in mythology were remnants of more primitive belief systems. Lang also engaged deeply with psychical research, coining the term and serving as president of the Society for Psychical Research in 1911. He used his anthropological studies, particularly his examination of spiritualism and animism, to critique materialistic viewpoints and explore the existence of high spiritual ideas among various cultures, connecting these to contemporary occult phenomena.

Beyond his folklore studies, Lang was a versatile writer and critic. He made significant contributions to classical scholarship, including notable prose translations of Homer's 'Odyssey' (1879) and 'Iliad' (1883), often undertaken with collaborators. His historical writings focused on Scottish subjects, such as 'The Mystery of Mary Stuart' (1901) and 'Pickle the Spy' (1897), characterized by detailed research and a distinctive literary style. Lang also published volumes of poetry and prose, including 'The Ballads and Lyrics of Old France' (1872) and collections of parodies and essays like 'Books and Bookmen' (1886) and 'Letters to Dead Authors' (1886). He was a prominent literary journalist, serving as the literary editor for Longman's Magazine and contributing widely to other publications.
