Poul William Anderson (1926-2001) was an American writer widely recognized for his contributions to science fiction and fantasy literature, as well as historical novels. Born in Pennsylvania to Danish parents, his early life involved periods in Texas and Denmark before the family settled in Minnesota.

Anderson's writing career began during his undergraduate studies at the University of Minnesota, with his first stories appearing in *Astounding Science Fiction* magazine. After graduating with a degree in physics, he pursued a freelance writing career. He married Karen Kruse in 1953, and they settled in the San Francisco Bay area, where their daughter Astrid was born. Throughout his career, Anderson was a significant figure in the speculative fiction community, co-founding organizations like the Society for Creative Anachronism and the Swordsmen and Sorcerers' Guild of America. He received numerous accolades, including multiple Hugo and Nebula Awards, and was recognized with the SFWA Grand Master award and induction into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. He passed away in 2001.

Born Poul William Anderson on November 25, 1926, in Bristol, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Danish immigrants. His family relocated to Texas shortly after his birth, residing there for over a decade. Following his father's death, his mother moved the children to Denmark. The family eventually returned to the United States, settling on a farm in Minnesota, particularly after the onset of World War II. Anderson pursued higher education at the University of Minnesota, where he earned a degree in physics with honors. It was during his time as an undergraduate that his writing career commenced, with early works published in *Astounding Science Fiction*.

In 1953, Poul Anderson married Karen Kruse, and the couple moved to the San Francisco Bay area. Their daughter, Astrid, was born in 1954. The couple made their home in Orinda, California. Anderson was a visible presence in the literary community, frequently giving readings at The Other Change of Hobbit bookstore in Berkeley. He was a founding member of significant organizations within the speculative fiction and historical reenactment communities: the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) in 1966 and the Swordsmen and Sorcerers' Guild of America (SAGA) in the mid-1960s. He also served as the sixth President of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, beginning in 1972.
