Born Poul William Anderson on November 25, 1926, in Bristol, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Danish immigrants. His family relocated to Texas shortly after his birth, residing there for over a decade. Following his father's death, his mother moved the children to Denmark. The family eventually returned to the United States, settling on a farm in Minnesota, particularly after the onset of World War II. Anderson pursued higher education at the University of Minnesota, where he earned a degree in physics with honors. It was during his time as an undergraduate that his writing career commenced, with early works published in *Astounding Science Fiction*.

Community Involvement and Personal Life

In 1953, Poul Anderson married Karen Kruse, and the couple moved to the San Francisco Bay area. Their daughter, Astrid, was born in 1954. The couple made their home in Orinda, California. Anderson was a visible presence in the literary community, frequently giving readings at The Other Change of Hobbit bookstore in Berkeley. He was a founding member of significant organizations within the speculative fiction and historical reenactment communities: the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) in 1966 and the Swordsmen and Sorcerers' Guild of America (SAGA) in the mid-1960s. He also served as the sixth President of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, beginning in 1972.
