Following the fall of Saigon in 1975, his family fled to the United States, initially settling in refugee camps before moving to Pennsylvania and later California. The family faced significant challenges, including a violent robbery at their grocery store and a home invasion. These experiences, particularly the displacement and trauma associated with being a refugee, have deeply informed Nguyen's literary work, offering a perspective often overlooked in dominant historical narratives.
