Elena Poniatowska, born in Paris in 1932, is a prominent French-born Mexican journalist and author whose extensive body of work centers on social and political issues, particularly concerning marginalized groups like women and the poor. Her family fled France for Mexico during World War II, and she began her writing career in Mexico City in the 1950s, initially focusing on interviews and society columns.

Despite facing limited opportunities for women in the mid-20th century, Poniatowska dedicated herself to writing about social and political matters in both her journalistic and literary endeavors. Her most recognized work, "The Night of Tlatelolco: Testimonies of Oral History," documented the 1968 student protests and subsequent government repression, earning her the nickname "the Red Princess" due to her leftist leanings. She is widely regarded as "Mexico's grande dame of letters" and remains an active writer.

Born Hélène Elizabeth Louise Amélie Paula Dolores Poniatowska Amor in Paris in 1932, Elena Poniatowska hailed from an aristocratic background. Her mother's family had left Mexico during the Mexican Revolution, and the family relocated from France to Mexico when Poniatowska was ten years old to escape the Second World War. She received her early education in France and later in Mexico, continuing her studies at institutions like the Liceo Franco-Mexicano. Although she never attended university, she became proficient in typing and began her professional life as a writer.

Poniatowska commenced her writing career in 1953 with the newspaper Excélsior, later also contributing to Novedades de México. Her initial assignments involved interviews and society reporting, but she soon shifted her focus to literary profiles and social issues. She is celebrated for her "testimonial narratives," which blend historical accounts with the voices of ordinary people often overlooked by the media. Her seminal work, "La noche de Tlatelolco" (The Night of Tlatelolco), is a prime example, capturing the testimonies of those affected by the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre. She has also been a co-founder of the newspaper La Jornada and the feminist magazine Fem.

Poniatowska's writing is characterized by its solidarity with the politically and economically oppressed, particularly women and the poor. She uses her platform to advocate for those she feels lack a voice, emphasizing the importance of personal connection with her subjects. The 1968 student movement profoundly impacted her, solidifying her commitment to using her writing as a tool for social change in Mexico.
