Sheikh Ahmed Aref El-Zein was a Lebanese Shi'a intellectual and reformist who founded the influential Al-Irfan magazine.

Sheikh Ahmed Aref El-Zein, born in South Lebanon in 1884, was a prominent Shi'a intellectual and reformist scholar. He was active during a period of significant intellectual ferment in Arab and Muslim societies in the early 20th century. Disillusioned by the educational and economic conditions of his community under Ottoman rule, El-Zein sought to engage with reformist movements in major cities like Damascus, Baghdad, and Cairo. He played a crucial role in bringing modern knowledge and literary content to his community and the wider Arab world through his founding of the monthly magazine Al-Irfan. El-Zein also established the first printing press in South Lebanon, published a weekly paper, and authored several books. He advocated for education for both genders and supported female writers. His intellectual pursuits also included bridging Islamic values with Western concepts of liberty and democracy, and he was a figure in the Syrian-Arab movement against Ottoman rule and later advocated for Lebanese independence.

El-Zein's early education was varied, beginning in local schools before attending institutions in Sidon and Nabatiya, where he studied Arabic, Islamic jurisprudence, and languages like Turkish and Persian. He furthered his education in Sidon, learning French and English. His professional life was dedicated to improving the lives of the underprivileged in his community and introducing them to contemporary reformist ideas and scientific advancements. He married his cousin Amira Ismail El-Zein in 1904, and they had eight children. El-Zein passed away in 1960 while visiting Iran and was buried at the shrine of Imam Ali al-Rida.

Al-Irfan Magazine and Intellectual Influence

In 1909, Sheikh Ahmed Aref El-Zein launched Al-Irfan, an Arabic-language monthly journal that served as a significant platform for intellectual discourse. Initially printed in Beirut, the magazine later moved to Sidon in 1910 after El-Zein established his own printing press, the first in South Lebanon. Al-Irfan covered a wide range of topics including science, history, literature, and sociology, effectively introducing Shi'a communities in Lebanon, Iraq, and Iran to contemporary issues and debates. The publication is noted for its role in fostering a sense of intellectual community and for bringing news of scientific innovations to its readership. It also provided a space for discussing matters of concern to Shi'a and Arab populations. The magazine's influence extended throughout the 20th century, shaping Lebanese Shi'a political and religious writings.

Educational and Social Reform

El-Zein was a fervent advocate for educational reform and the modernization of his conservative society. He championed the cause of education for both men and women, recognizing its importance for community development. In line with his reformist ideals, he actively supported female authors, publishing their works either under their own names or using pseudonyms, thereby providing a crucial outlet for their voices. His efforts aimed to uplift his community by exposing them to progressive ideas and scientific advancements of the era. He also worked to reconcile traditional Islamic values with emerging Western concepts of liberty and democracy, seeking a synthesis that could guide societal progress.

Political Activism and National Movements

Beyond his intellectual and cultural contributions, El-Zein was also a significant figure in the political landscape of his time. He was a prominent participant in the broader Syrian-Arab national movement that opposed Ottoman rule during the later years of the Sultanate. Following the decline of Ottoman power and the subsequent French mandate, El-Zein continued his advocacy, this time championing the cause of independence for Lebanon. His engagement in these movements reflected his deep commitment to self-determination and the political aspirations of his people.
