Albert Low

Albert Low (1928–2016) was a prominent figure in Western Zen Buddhism, recognized as a Zen master within the Philip Kapleau lineage. He led a multifaceted life, serving as an internationally published author, a former human resources executive, and a trained counselor. Born in London, Low lived in various countries including England, South Africa, Canada, and the United States, eventually settling in Montreal in 1979. He held a BA in Philosophy and Psychology and received an honorary Doctor of Laws from Queen's University in 2003 for his academic and community contributions.

Low's spiritual journey began with an interest in Zen Buddhism in 1955. His formal practice deepened significantly when he met Zen Master Haku'un Yasutani and later studied for two decades with Philip Kapleau. After a career in human resources, where he developed theories on creativity and management, Low dedicated himself fully to Zen practice and teaching. He served at the Rochester Zen Center and, from 1979, led the Montreal Zen Center as its rōshi, guiding over two hundred students in spiritual and psychological matters. His writings explored the intersection of Zen, human nature, evolution, and creativity.

Albert Low's engagement with Zen Buddhism evolved from an intellectual interest in 1955 to a profound spiritual path. He studied under Haku'un Yasutani and then extensively with Philip Kapleau for twenty years. This dedicated practice culminated in his authorization as a Zen master in 1986. He eventually became the rōshi and director of the Montreal Zen Center, where he guided a large student body, offering counsel on both spiritual and psychological challenges. His work synthesized Zen principles with his extensive background in Western thought.

During his career as a senior human resources executive in South Africa and Canada, Albert Low developed original theories on creativity, organization, and management. He observed a close connection between creativity, a subject he studied extensively, and Zen practice. This research led to his book "Zen and Creative Management," which achieved significant sales. Low frequently gave talks and seminars on these subjects, bridging the gap between corporate leadership and contemplative disciplines.

Throughout his life, Low deeply investigated human nature, drawing upon his extensive meditation practice, counseling experience, and a broad knowledge base encompassing Western psychology, philosophy, and science. He showed a particular interest in evolutionary theory, which informed his final book, "The Origin of Human Nature: a Zen Buddhist Looks at Evolution." His public contributions included numerous talks on CBC Radio and Television, reflecting his commitment to exploring profound questions about existence and consciousness.
