Albert Gallatin Mackey, M.D. (1807–1881) was an American physician and author whose primary legacy lies in his comprehensive works on Freemasonry. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, he initially pursued a medical career, graduating in 1832 and later serving as a demonstrator of anatomy. However, he abandoned medical practice in 1844 to dedicate himself to writing and scholarship.

Mackey's intellectual pursuits extended beyond Freemasonry to include the study of various languages, the Middle Ages, and abstruse symbolism, including cabalistic and Talmudic research. He established and edited Masonic publications and held significant positions within Masonic organizations, including Grand Lecturer and Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina, and Secretary General of the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite for the Southern Jurisdiction. He was also a unionist and held federal office after the Civil War, serving as President of the South Carolina Constitutional Convention.

He frequently lectured on the intellectual and moral development of the Middle Ages, reflecting a deep engagement with historical scholarship. His father was also a notable figure in education and publishing, having authored a significant work on arithmetic. Mackey's own early career included teaching to fund his medical education, demonstrating a commitment to learning and intellectual pursuits throughout his life. He also founded and sustained Masonic periodicals, including "The Southern and Western Masonic Miscellany" and a "Quarterly" publication, to disseminate Masonic knowledge.

During the American Civil War, Mackey was a proponent of the Union. Following the conflict, his political engagement increased. In 1865, President Andrew Johnson appointed him Collector of the Port of Charleston. He further served as the president of the 1868 South Carolina Constitutional Convention, playing a role in the state's post-war reconstruction. Mackey also made an attempt to enter national politics, running for the United States Senate in South Carolina in 1868, though he was narrowly defeated. His involvement in public life demonstrates a commitment to civic duty alongside his scholarly endeavors.
