A. A. Milne was an English author, celebrated for Winnie-the-Pooh, but primarily a playwright before its success.

Alan Alexander Milne, born in 1882, was an English writer recognized globally for his Winnie-the-Pooh stories and children's poetry. However, before the immense popularity of Pooh overshadowed his earlier career, Milne was primarily a playwright. He also served in both World Wars, first as a lieutenant in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment during WWI, where he was involved in signals and propaganda, and later as a captain in the Home Guard during WWII. Milne's son, Christopher Robin Milne, served as the inspiration for the character Christopher Robin and the Pooh stories, stemming from visits to the London Zoo and walks in the Ashdown Forest. Milne bequeathed the original manuscripts of the Winnie-the-Pooh stories to Trinity College, Cambridge. He died in 1956, having found the overwhelming fame of his children's books a source of annoyance.

Early Life and Literary Beginnings

Born in London in 1882, Alan Alexander Milne grew up in a household run by his father, who managed a small school where H. G. Wells was once a teacher. Milne displayed an early aptitude for reading and writing, attending Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied mathematics but was drawn to writing. He contributed to and edited the student magazine 'Granta' and later became a prolific contributor and assistant editor for the humor magazine 'Punch'. His early career saw him publish numerous plays and novels, including the mystery 'The Red House Mystery', and he also wrote for the emerging British film industry. Milne's early literary path was characterized by a desire to write what he pleased, a principle he held throughout his career, even when publishers and audiences expected different genres from him.

The Creation of Winnie-the-Pooh and Later Years

Milne achieved lasting fame with his creation of Winnie-the-Pooh, inspired by his son Christopher Robin and the real bear Winnie at the London Zoo. The stories, set in the Hundred Acre Wood (based on Ashdown Forest), were brought to life by E. H. Shepard's illustrations. The first Pooh book was published in 1926, followed by 'The House at Pooh Corner' in 1928, alongside poetry collections like 'When We Were Very Young' and 'Now We Are Six'. Despite the books' immense success, Milne found the widespread attention, particularly for his son, to be a source of considerable annoyance. He felt the fame of the children's books overshadowed his other literary achievements and caused undue publicity for his son. After a period of declining health, including a stroke and brain surgery, Milne retired to his farm and died in 1956.

Notable Quotes

“the only excuse which I have yet discovered for writing anything is that I want to write it; and I should be as proud to be delivered of a Telephone Directory con amore as I should be ashamed to create a Blank Verse Tragedy at the bidding of others.”
“I feel that the legal Christopher Robin has already had more publicity than I want for him. I do not want CR Milne to ever wish that his name were”
