Rahu

Sanskrit Concept Hindu

Rahu is a lunar node, the ascending point where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic, representing an eclipsing entity in Hindu astrology. It symbolizes disruption, obsession, and karmic debts, often associated with the head of a serpent or demon that swallows the sun and moon during eclipses.

Where the word comes from

The Sanskrit term "Rahu" (राहु) originates from the Vedic period. Its root is debated, possibly related to "rah" (to seize or swallow) or "rahasya" (secret). In Hindu cosmology, it signifies the celestial dragon's head, a personification of the ascending lunar node, first documented in astronomical texts.

In depth

A Daitya (demon) whose lower parts were like a dragon's tail. He made liimself immortal by robbing the gods of some Ainrita^tho elixir of divine life— for which they were churning the ocean of milk. Tenable to deprive him of his immortality. Vishnu exiled him from the earth and made of him the constellation Draco, his head being called Rahu and his tail Ketu— astronomically, the ascending and descending nodes. With the latter appendage he has ever since waged a destructive war on the denouncers of his robbery, the sun and the moon, and (during the eclipse) is said to swallow them. Of course the fable has a mystic and occult meaning .

How different paths see it

Hindu
In Hindu astrology (Jyotisha), Rahu is one of the Navagrahas (nine celestial bodies), personified as a demon who causes eclipses by swallowing the Sun and Moon. It represents illusion, ambition, worldly desires, and the shadow self, influencing destiny and karmic patterns.

What it means today

Blavatsky's description of Rahu as a Daitya, a demon whose head and tail are the lunar nodes, offers a potent lens through which to view this astrological concept. It is not simply an astronomical marker but a personification of the forces that obscure illumination. In the Puranic narrative, Rahu’s act of stealing amrita, the elixir of immortality, and his subsequent beheading by Vishnu, leaving only his head to wreak havoc, speaks to the enduring power of desire and the consequences of unfulfilled ambition. This myth resonates with the psychological archetype of the shadow, as explored by Carl Jung, representing the repressed or rejected aspects of the self that can nevertheless exert a powerful, often disruptive, influence. The astronomical phenomenon of an eclipse, where the Sun or Moon is temporarily obscured, becomes a metaphor for moments of spiritual blindness or karmic intervention. Rahu, in this context, is the agent of disruption, compelling individuals to confront what has been hidden or denied, much like the serpent’s head that continues to act even after separation from the body. The "destructive war on the denouncers of his robbery" points to the ongoing struggle between illusion and truth, desire and detachment. Understanding Rahu, therefore, is an invitation to recognize the potent, often unseen, forces that shape our experience and to engage with them not as adversaries but as catalysts for profound transformation. The occult meaning Blavatsky hints at lies in this very engagement, in recognizing the shadow and integrating its lessons, thereby diminishing its power to obscure the inner light.
