Presence

The English word "Presence" derives from the Latin "praesentia," meaning "being at hand" or "nearness." It stems from "praesens," the present participle of "esse," meaning "to be." The concept, however, resonates across numerous ancient languages and spiritual traditions, signifying immediate, unmediated being.

Eye of Horus. A very sacretl .symbol in aneient Egypt. It was called the auta: the right eye represented the sun, the left, the moon. Says Macrobius: "The outa (or uta) is it not the emblem of the sun, king of the world, who from his elevated throne sees all the Universe below him?"

The notion of "Presence", while seemingly simple, offers a profound counterpoint to the fragmented, future-obsessed tenor of modern existence. It echoes Mircea Eliade's observations on the sacred as an experience of being in the world that is qualitatively different, a rupture in the homogeneity of profane time. This is not merely about being "in the moment" as a fleeting sensation, but about inhabiting a mode of being where the self is less a subject observing an object and more a fluid, receptive field of awareness.

Think of the ancient Egyptian "Eye of Horus," as alluded to by Blavatsky. It was not simply a symbol of protection or power, but a representation of an all-seeing, all-knowing awareness, a divine vigilance that mirrors the alert, unblinking gaze of consciousness itself. This "Eye" sees beyond the superficial, apprehending the underlying reality. Similarly, Sufi masters like Idries Shah often spoke of the "Presence" as a state of heightened awareness attainable through disciplined practice, a direct apprehension of truth that bypasses the intellect's tendency to distort.

For the modern seeker, cultivating Presence can be understood as a practice of radical attention. It’s akin to the Zen master’s admonition to "chop wood, carry water," not as mundane chores, but as full immersion in the act itself, where the boundary between doer and doing dissolves. This is the essence of what Carl Jung might have called individuation, the process of becoming whole by integrating all aspects of the self, a journey that necessarily begins with a clear and present awareness of who and what one is, right now. It is the quiet hum beneath the cacophony of thought, the still point in the turning world, waiting to be recognized.

The challenge lies in distinguishing this profound Presence from mere distraction or passive daydreaming. It requires an active, yet effortless, engagement with reality, a state of alert receptivity that is both deeply personal and universally connected. It is the silent awakening to the miracle of existence, not as a future event, but as the ever-unfolding present.
