Paranirvana

From Sanskrit, "Paranirvana" is a compound of "para" meaning "beyond" or "supreme" and "nirvana," signifying "blowing out" or "cessation." It denotes a nirvana that transcends ordinary experience, often associated with the final passing of a Buddha or a highly realized soul, distinct from the nirvana attained during life.

Absolute Non-Being, which is equivalent to ab.solute Being or "Be-ness", the state reached by the human Monad at the end of the great cycle (See Secret Doctrine I. 135). The same as Paranishpanna.

Blavatsky’s rendering of Paranirvana as "Absolute Non-Being, which is equivalent to absolute Being or 'Be-ness'" is a profound philosophical gambit, echoing the apophatic theology found in various mystical traditions. It invites us to confront our deepest existential anxieties, particularly the fear of annihilation, by reframing it as the ultimate homecoming. Mircea Eliade, in his exploration of archaic religions, often highlighted humanity's perennial quest for a return to the sacred, primordial state, a state that often lies beyond the confines of empirical experience. This concept resonates with the mystical union described by Christian mystics like Meister Eckhart, who spoke of the "Godhead" as a ground of being so profound that it is beyond all names and attributes, a "nothingness" from which all existence springs.

The notion of "Be-ness" suggests a state of pure existence, unconditioned and unmanifested, prior to any conceptualization or individuation. This is not an empty void, but a plenitude that our limited intellect struggles to grasp. For the modern seeker, grappling with the fragmented selfhood that modern life often cultivates, Paranirvana offers a radical perspective on wholeness. It suggests that the dissolution of the ego, the very thing we strive to protect and enhance, is the pathway to an ultimate reality that is both more real and more encompassing than our individual lives. The practice, if it can be called that, lies in cultivating detachment from the impermanent, recognizing the illusory nature of the self as a separate entity, and thus preparing for that ultimate "blowing out" which is, paradoxically, the ultimate arrival. The journey toward Paranirvana is thus a journey of unlearning, of letting go of the very structures of self that define our perceived reality. It is the ultimate act of surrender, not into oblivion, but into the boundless ocean of existence itself.
