Linga Sharira
The Linga Sharira, or "form body," is the subtle, non-physical counterpart to the gross physical body in Hindu philosophy. It's considered the blueprint or energetic matrix from which the physical form arises and to which it is tethered, often equated with the astral or etheric body.
Where the word comes from
The term "Linga Sharira" originates from Sanskrit. "Linga" (लिङ्ग) can mean sign, mark, or emblem, and in this context, it refers to the subtle form or pattern. "Sharira" (शरीर) translates to body. Thus, it signifies the "emblematic body" or "form body," representing the energetic template.
In depth
The "body", i.e., the aerial symbol of the body. This term designates the doppelgangcr or the "astral body" of man or animal. It is the eidolon of the Greeks, the vital and prototypal body; the reflection of the men of flesh. It is born he fore and dies or fades out, with the disappearance of the last atom of the body.

What it means today
Blavatsky's definition, though rooted in a specific era of Theosophical interpretation, points to a profound resonance within esoteric traditions regarding the nature of the self. The Linga Sharira, the "form body," is not merely a phantom or a shadow, but the vital, energetic matrix from which our physical form is sculpted. Mircea Eliade, in his explorations of shamanism and archaic cosmologies, often touched upon the concept of a spiritual double or soul-body, a luminous or ethereal counterpart that accompanies the individual. This is not so different from the Indian notion of the Linga Sharira, which is understood to be permeated by prana, the vital life force that animates all existence. It is the subtle scaffolding, the energetic armature, that gives shape and integrity to our corporeal existence.
The ancient yogis understood that disturbances or imbalances in the Linga Sharira could manifest as physical ailments, and that by working with the subtle body through practices like pranayama (breath control) and meditation, one could restore harmony to the gross body. Carl Jung, in his work on archetypes and the collective unconscious, might see in the Linga Sharira a manifestation of the anima or animus, the unconscious feminine or masculine aspect of the psyche, projected onto a subtle, energetic form that influences our perception and embodiment. It is the subtle blueprint, the energetic signature, that precedes and informs the physical, a concept that echoes in modern inquiries into consciousness and its relationship to matter, suggesting that our physical reality is not a given, but a co-creation between the unseen energetic architecture and the dense material world. The Linga Sharira reminds us that we are, in essence, beings of energy as much as of flesh, a subtle yet persistent truth woven into the fabric of our being.
