Eleanor Jourdain

The term derives from the names of the two primary experiencers, Charlotte Anne Moberly and Eleanor Frances Jourdain. The incident itself gained prominence in the early 20th century following the publication of their shared account, "An Adventure," in 1911.

Eleanor Frances Jourdain (16 November 1863 – 6 April 1924) was an English academic, Principal of St Hugh's College, Oxford, 1915 to 1924. She died of a sudden heart attack after being forced to resign her post. Jourdain rose to fame for claiming that she and fellow-teacher Charlotte Anne Moberly had slipped back in time to the period of the French Revolution while on a trip to Versailles, known as the Moberly–Jourdain incident.

The Moberly–Jourdain incident, often relegated to the curious footnotes of parapsychology, offers a compelling, albeit enigmatic, glimpse into the porous boundaries of consciousness and its relationship with time. Eleanor Jourdain, a respected academic and principal of St Hugh's College, Oxford, found herself, alongside her colleague Charlotte Moberly, at the heart of a phenomenon that defied rational explanation. Their account of a "time slip" at the Petit Trianon in Versailles, where they encountered what they perceived as spectral figures and scenes from the late 18th century, resonates with older traditions that understood reality not as a fixed, objective stage, but as a fluid manifestation of consciousness.

Mircea Eliade, in his exploration of archaic cosmologies, noted how cyclical time, prevalent in many ancient cultures, allowed for a sense of simultaneity with the sacred past. The Moberly–Jourdain experience, while occurring within a modern, linear temporal framework, hints at a similar permeability, a momentary breach where the present yielded to a deeply felt historical echo. Carl Jung’s concept of synchronicity, the acausal connecting principle, might also offer a lens, suggesting that the shared subjective experience of Moberly and Jourdain was not merely a hallucination but a meaningful conjunction of inner and outer events, a resonance with a past moment imprinted on the psychic landscape of the place. The incident compels us to consider whether our linear perception of time is the only, or even the most accurate, way to apprehend existence, and whether certain places, imbued with historical intensity, can act as conduits for such temporal echoes. It is a reminder that the universe of experience may hold more dimensions than our everyday awareness permits us to perceive.
