Atma-bhu

From Sanskrit, "Atma" (self, soul) and "bhu" (to be, to exist, to become). It signifies that which exists by its own nature, independent of any external cause or origin. The concept echoes in Vedic literature as the ultimate principle.

Blavatsky's definition, "Soul-existence, or existing as soul," while concise, hints at a deeper resonance. Atma-bhu, in its Sanskrit roots, speaks not merely of a soul's state of being, but of the very principle of self-origination. It is the primordial spark, the uncreated creator, the ultimate ground of consciousness that is prior to form and name. Mircea Eliade, in his studies of archaic religions, frequently explored concepts of the uncreated creator, the divine artisan who brings forth existence from a state of non-being or primordial unity. This self-born principle is not a deity in the anthropomorphic sense, but the silent, immanent potentiality from which all phenomena arise. It is the existential bedrock, the absolute "I Am" that precedes any "I am this" or "I am that." For the modern seeker, grappling with existential anxieties and the relentless pursuit of meaning, Atma-bhu offers an invitation to turn inward, not to find a pre-existing soul, but to recognize the very capacity for existence as an intrinsic, self-sustaining reality. It suggests that the universe, and our own consciousness, are not contingent accidents but expressions of an inherent, self-generating power. The journey, then, is not one of becoming, but of recognizing what already is, in its unmanifest, self-born glory. To contemplate Atma-bhu is to touch the edge of the ineffable, the silent hum of existence before the symphony of creation began.
