A.P. Sinnett was an English author and prominent theosophist, known for his correspondence with the Mahatmas.

Alfred Percy Sinnett (1840–1921) was an English author and a significant figure in the theosophical movement. Born in London, he pursued a career in journalism, eventually becoming the editor of "The Pioneer," a leading English newspaper in India. During his time in India, Sinnett encountered Helena Blavatsky, the co-founder of the Theosophical Society, and became a guest in his home. This marked the beginning of a crucial period for Sinnett, as he entered into correspondence with the Masters, or Mahatmas, whose letters, largely addressed to Sinnett and his wife Patience, became central to theosophical discourse and later contributed to internal divisions within the Society. Sinnett also played a role in the London Lodge of the Theosophical Society, serving as its president.

His writings explored various occult and esoteric themes, often drawing from his theosophical studies and experiences. Sinnett's literary output includes works like "The Occult World" and "Esoteric Buddhism," the latter of which introduced the concept of Root Races. He also authored "Karma: A Novel" and "Incidents in the Life of Madame Blavatsky." Throughout his life, Sinnett remained dedicated to the dissemination of theosophical ideas, contributing to the intellectual landscape of esoteric thought in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Early Life and Journalism

Alfred Percy Sinnett was born in London in 1840. His father passed away when he was young, leaving his mother, Jane Sinnett, to raise him and his sister. Jane herself was an author and translator, contributing to periodical literature. By 1871, Sinnett was working as a journalist and married Patience, with whom he lived along with her mother. The family later relocated to India, where Sinnett achieved a prominent position as the editor of "The Pioneer," a significant English-language daily newspaper in the region.

Involvement with Theosophy and the Mahatmas

Sinnett's life took a pivotal turn with his engagement in theosophy. He met Helena Blavatsky, a co-founder of the Theosophical Society, who stayed at his home in Allahabad for several weeks. This encounter led to a deep involvement with Blavatsky and her teachings. In 1880, Blavatsky and Henry Steel Olcott visited the Sinnetts at their summer residence in Simla. A significant aspect of Sinnett's theosophical journey was his correspondence with the Masters (Mahatmas). He initiated this contact by asking Blavatsky if he could communicate with her Mahatmas, leading to the famous Mahatma Letters, many of which were directed to Sinnett or his wife, Patience. These letters became a cornerstone of theosophical literature and were central to later controversies within the Theosophical Society.

Literary Contributions and Theosophical Influence

Returning to England by 1884, Sinnett continued his involvement with theosophical circles. He invited Charles Webster Leadbeater to tutor his son and George Arundale, a move that brought other figures like Curuppumullage Jinarajadasa into the theosophical sphere. Sinnett also served as the president of the London Lodge of the Theosophical Society. His writings were instrumental in popularizing theosophical concepts. Notable works include "The Occult World" (1881), which documented his early experiences with Blavatsky and the Mahatmas, and "Esoteric Buddhism" (1883), which explored ideas like Root Races. He also authored "Karma: A Novel" (1885) and "Incidents in the Life of Madame Blavatsky" (1886), among other titles that delved into occult teachings and spiritual development.
